For the second straight playoff series, the Toronto Raptors lost Game 1 at home to put themselves in the opening hole.

After falling as a 3.5-point favorite to the Miami Heat 102-96 in overtime, the Raptors are listed as having a 4.5-point chalk for Game 2 on Thursday on a sportsbook monitored by the Odds Sharks.

Toronto rallied late in Game 1 against Miami on Tuesday to force OT, as it trailed 79-69 with 6:31 remaining and was hit by point guard Kyle Lowry in the final seconds to reach the extra session. A half-court shot was required.

But then the Raptors ran out of gas and didn’t score until with only 1:14 left in the OT. The Miami backcourt of Dwayne Wade and Goran Dragic combined for 50 points and outclassed Lori and DeMar DeRozan by 21.

Lowry finished with a playoff-following seven points—the first time he hasn’t scored in double digits since last year’s first-round playoff series versus the Washington Wizards. He made three of 13 shots from the field, including one in seven attempts from a three-point boundary, and had six assists, four rebounds, three steals and five fouls.

DeRozan averaged 29.3 points in four regular-season meetings with the Heat and scored 22 in 9-of-22 shooting in Game 1. Toronto’s backcourt had the lead in the series, but Wade’s experience and Dragic’s size could have given the Raptors a bigger problem here.

According to the Odds Sharks NBA database, Miami have now won three in a row and followed a three-game losing streak against the spread in the post-season. The Heat had dropped five of the previous six meetings with the Raptors before winning Game 1, losing three straight on the road, averaging 12.7 points.

Wade was surprisingly a minus-three in Game 1 and Dragic was a plus-15 when he was on the court. Dragik was relatively quiet in the playoffs until Game 7 versus the Charlotte Hornets in the first round, when he scored a team-high 25 points en route to 106–73.

Looks like an aggressive off-season is paying off for the Miami Heat. They are currently ranked second in the Eastern Conference and have a chance to stay there for the rest of the 2021–22 NBA season. To do so, they may decide to take another step to inflict some more firepower on the team.

Kyle Lowry was a major addition to the Heat this off-season. He averages 13.4 points per game at 39 at the start of this season. He’s adding 8.3 assists per game and gives Heat the All-Star option on top of the offense.

Tyler Harrow continued to score 20.6 points per game off the bench in the next leg. The Heat have been battling a few injuries but have managed to stay consistent despite the loss.

The franchise began play as an expansion team in the 1988–89 season. After a period of mediocrity, the Heat gained relevance during the 1990s following the appointment of Pat Riley as team president and head coach. Riley made trades for Alonzo Schock and Tim Hardaway, which propelled the team into playoff contention. Shook and Hardaway led the Heat to four division titles, before their departure in 2001 and 2002, respectively. The team found success even after Dwayne Wade was drafted in 2003.

Under Wade and after a trade for former NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Shaquille O’Neal, Miami won its first NBA Finals in 2006, when Riley named himself head coach for a second term. After O’Neill left two years later, the team struggled for the remainder of 2000. Riley remained the team’s chairman, but was replaced as head coach by Erik Spoelstra. In 2010, the Heat signed former league MVP LeBron James and perennial NBA All-Star Chris Bosch, forming the “Big Three” with Wade. During their four years together, Spoelstra, James, Wade, and Bosch led the Heat to the NBA Finals every season, and won back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013. All three lasted until 2016, and the team entered a period of rebuilding. After acquiring All-Star Jimmy Butler in 2019, the Heat returned to the NBA Finals in 2020.

The Heat set the NBA’s third-longest winning streak, a record 27 straight games, during the 2012–13 season. Four Hall of Famers have played for Miami, and James won two consecutive NBA MVP awards while playing for the team.

Score

The Miami Heat forced 20 turnovers and got 39 points from LeBron James, who won a 99–90 win over the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center in LA.

Despite Kobe Bryant’s grueling shootout into the night, the Lakers managed to hold things off until a late push by the Heat. Bryant, who received the NBA’s major vote for the 2013 All-Star Game, started 3-for-17 before catching fire of late. Despite his better play down the stretch, he still made an ugly 8-for-25 off the floor.

Miami’s groundbreaking defense generated a team-record 14 stalls on the night, and the Heat capitalized on 23 points from turnover. That defensive aggression helped the Heat suffer another beating on the boards: LA outclassed Heat 42-35.

Adebayo finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Here’s what he had to say about his first game

“Trying to get back into the groove today. My teammates tried to get me involved, but we just played ball and figured it out. We’ve got the win and it’s always good to have your first game, and that’s what matters the most. ,

“Separately, you enjoy someone’s success to the farthest. You want to feed that positive energy to someone and you hope they have a good opportunity and you take advantage of it.
