Despite his departure in the 2023 offseason, Hardman’s return to Kansas City was something everyone saw as a potential fit for both parties. Hardman is familiar with the system and should be able to play soon. The Chiefs have not yet found the stable WR system they want, and he could be part of a rotation with WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Sky Moore, and Rashee Rice. Plus, he provides the Chiefs with someone explosive who can work in the scheme of things, especially in the red zone like he did in his 2022 season (six TDs in eight games).

The Kansas City Chiefs brought back a familiar face by acquiring wide receiver Mecole Hardman in a trade with the New York Jets on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Given Kansas City’s average play at wide receiver, the natural question is how the acquisition of Hardman will impact the already limited fantasy value of wideouts like Kadarius Toney and Rashee Rice.

The Chiefs are not making a midseason trade for any of Hardman’s players β€” whom they decided to re-sign in the offseason β€” because they are happy with their receiving group. And the player who hurts the most is Toney, who has barely offered any fantasy value in the first place.

A big reason I’m completely out on JuJu Smith-Schuster is that he couldn’t even beat Hardman in fantasy points per game. It was only a difference of 0.1 ppg, but Hardman shouldn’t be better than Smith-Schuster. Still, he was.

Injuries limited Hardman to eight games, but before the injury, he was really starting to heat up. After being completely irrelevant in the first month of the season, Hardman posted averages of 12.0, 13.2, 28.0 and 19.9 per game before suffering an injury and missing the remainder of the regular season. His snap shares in those games were 40%, 45%, 63% and 54%.

That said, I think his value was almost entirely tied to Patrick Mahomes. It was hard to imagine him being a hypothetical factor in many other places. The Chiefs have the ideal situation of having the best quarterback in the league and no truly effective wide receivers.

Instead, Hardman signed with the Jets. However that doesn’t mean he’ll be there long term, Hardman has yet to prove he can be a consistent fantasy contributor. He is useful in surges that are largely unpredictable, but the cannon can be triggered consistently.
