McKayla Maroney earned a team gymnastics gold medal at the London Olympics, but she became a meme after her silver-medal performance.
The U.S. gymnast inadvertently turned social media sensation “McKayla is not impressed” with a face she made after receiving her vault silver medal. Maroney was the overwhelming favorite for gold, but she fell on her second of two vaults and was passed by Romanian Sandra Izbasa.
Larry Nassar
Decorated gymnast McKayla Maroney, member of the 2012 Women’s Olympic gymnastics team, testified Sept. 15 before the Senate Judiciary Committee as lawmakers examined if the FBI mishandled its investigation of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted in 2018 of sexually abusing women and young female athletes in his care.
“He turned out to be more of a pedophile than a doctor, she said. Maroney said the FBI changed her story to protect a “serial child abuser” instead of her and other athletes. “They had legal, legitimate evidence of child abuse and did nothing.” Maroney testified alongside Simone Biles, Maggie Nichols and Aly Raisman.
2021
Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney on Wednesday told U.S. lawmakers she feels betrayed by FBI agents, after they failed to investigate former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, despite her telling them he had sexually abused her.
FBI Director Chris Wray told the Senate panel that the actions of the agents who botched the investigation are inexcusable, and he announced that one of the agents “no longer works for the bureau in any capacity.”
