What happened to today
Max Verstappen has said Red Bull suffered technical problems during the final leg of the Bahrain Grand Prix, after a disappointing start to the new season “should not happen at this stage”.
Charles Leclerc led Ferrari 1–2 at the Bahrain International Circuit when Verstappen and teammate Sergio Pérez were forced to retire during the closing stages of Sunday’s 57-lap encounter.
Both Red Bull drivers hit technical issues, with Verstappen losing straight-line speed and significantly slowing down, while Perez stopped immediately after spinning at Turn 1 on the final lap, handing Lewis Hamilton a podium spot.
Verstappen explains Red Bull’s problems
Verstappen’s problems began with complaints about the steering being heavy before the safety car lost engine power upon restart.
“I don’t know why,” Verstappen told Sky Sports, when asked what caused his early steering issues.
“We don’t really know or fully understand why this happened, but it definitely happened after the tires came on and I went [in the pit-stop].
“It wasn’t that the steering wheel got too heavy, it was almost impossible to steer, and the faster I was going, it felt like there was a delay, so every time I was turning right Some time ago it felt like something was happening.
“My restart was pretty bad at the time. I wanted to go to the throttle, but I couldn’t open my wheel because it got stuck.”
Dnf
Red Bull calling the start of the new season a disaster would be an understatement. The runners-up at last year’s Constructors’ Championship had a disastrous start as both cars came to a halt just before the end of the race. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were both ruled out, citing a technical problem.
What could have been a grand start to 2022 now seems like a distant dream. With 30 valuable points, Red Bull will have a tough time coming back to win the championship this year. In the midst of all this, a shocking revelation came out which could be the reason for such devastation.
The cars are alleged to have encountered problems with their fuel pumps. Both Verstappen and Perez retired with similar problems with their car. The Dutchman fell down the order, while Perez got out of nowhere. Furthermore, Pierre Gasly of Red Bull’s sister team AlphaTauri faced a similar situation when his AT03 caught fire mid-race.
It is believed that the problems facing Red Bull cars were due to the new fuel introduced in F1 in 2022. The E10 fuel had a temperature problem when the car was on low tank. While teams like Ferrari or Mercedes have already tackled and worked on this problem, Red Bull fell short on it.
Bahrain
Max Verstappen was disappointed with Red Bull’s credibility at the Bahrain Grand Prix, which forced both cars to retire from Sunday’s race.
Verstappen looked on course for second, but suffered a critical mistake with the end in sight, while teammate Sergio Pérez also succumbed to late play.
The world champion had to retire to the pits on lap 54, while Perez remained on the track until the last lap before stopping.
This allowed Mercedes to steal the podium spot alongside Lewis Hamilton as Ferrari secured a one-two with Charles Leclerc to take him home.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the race, Verstappen was clearly disappointed with a number of faults, including steering problems and instructions on how to take it easy on post-pit out laps.
