Dave Roberts:
Dodgers pitcher Max Scherzer — an eight-time All-Star, three-time Cy Young Award winner, four-time wins leader and three-time National League strikeout leader — was removed during the fourth inning of his team’s win-or-go-home wild-card game against the Cardinals on Wednesday night.
Scherzer, who threw 94 pitches and allowed three hits, one earned run and three walks, was pulled with runners on second and third base and one out in the top of the fifth inning. Los Angeles’ starting pitcher wasn’t pleased when manager Dave Roberts visited the mound, refusing to give him the baseball and forcing him to shake the ball loose from his glove.
Home Run:

The Nats chased Darvish after only three frames. Scherzer didn’t last that much longer, exiting after 91 pitches in 3 2/3 innings. For both, it marked the shortest, non-injury-related starts of their seasons.
“Uncharacteristic,” manager Dave Martinez said. “I’ve never seen him like that. Just a tough fourth inning for him.”
Highlights:
Max Scherzer became the 19th member of the 3,000-strikeout club on Sunday, and he did so in vintage Scherzer fashion.
Eric Hosmer, like so many Scherzer strikeout victims, looked like he had no chance when swinging at Scherzer’s 88 mph changeup. But the fact that the ever-intense future Hall of Famer seemed annoyed that he had to acknowledge the accomplishment in the moment because it meant he had to stop mowing down Padres hitters in a game that mattered in the standings.
Curtain Call:
The three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed a solo home run to Michael Brantley just two batters into his start but settled down from that point on, yielding only one additional run the rest of the way.
Scherzer tied a season-high with 109 pitches and finished with 10 strikeouts over seven strong innings of work. “With everything on the line, the way the crowd was, that was a high-adrenaline start,” he said after the game.
