The Calgary Flames traded a conditional fourth-round pick for Matthew Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers, the teams announced Friday. A source told The Athletic that the forward has signed an eight-year contract extension with Florida worth $76 million. Takachuk, 24, is coming off a three-year, $21 million contract.

The Flames received Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weiger, Cole Schwindt and a conditional 2025 first-round pick in the deal.

Calgary, which had previously seen Johnny Goudreau signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets as an unrestricted free agent this offseason, filed for arbitration with Takachuk in mid-July. The Flames also saw Eric GudBranson leave this summer.

Free agent

Matthew Tkachuk signed an 8-year / $76,000,000 contract with the Florida Panthers, which includes a $68,000,000 signing bonus, $76,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $9,500,000. In 2022–23, Tkachuk will earn a base salary of $1,000,000 and a signing bonus of $8,000,000, while hitting a cap of $9,500,000.

Arbitration date

According to a report in The Athletic, Takachuk is not ready to sign a long-term contract with the Flames, which is likely to lead to his trade.

Now it looks like it’s a matter of when, if not, Takachuk will be traded. Takachuk and the Flames have an arbitration date set for August 11, making a trade a tough deadline to complete.

According to a report from longtime USA Today hockey writer Kevin Allen, who now covers the Detroit Red Wings for HockeyBuzz, the Flames are looking for a big race for Tkachuk.
