Arbitration
The Calgary Flames filed for club-elected pay arbitration with Matthew Tkachuk on Monday night.
The clever move comes a day after Takachuk and his camp, led by Newport Sports, opted not to file for arbitration themselves.
“This gives us the opportunity to continue working towards a contractual solution with our representatives by removing the possibility of an offer sheet,” the club tweeted.
The wording of Flems’ statement suggests that an offer letter was – at least – a threat. An offer letter – essentially a contract presented to Takachuk from another team – could net the Flames four first-round draft picks, given that his next deal could be worth at least $10.5 million a year. He is off the table now. Since the Flames have filed for arbitration, Takachuk won’t be able to sign his qualifying motion — which was due to expire on Friday — either.
An important factor here is that Takachuk is not eligible for an award of less than $9 million (Takachuk’s base salary from 2021–22), due to the Flames filing in the second club-elected window. So, we know it wasn’t just about lowering the price on Takachuk for at least a one-year deal. Had that been the case, they would have filed in the first window.
Jayson Tatum
They are both first-round draft picks still playing for the team that drafted them. Tatum was drafted into the Boston Celtics in the 2017 NBA Draft with a 3rd overall pick, while Tkachuk was drawn in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft with a 6th overall pick.
Besides that… not much, right? They don’t even play the same game.
What you may not know is that they actually went to the same Chaminade College Preparatory School in Missouri. Matthew’s father, Keith, spent time playing for the St. Louis Blues helping his son share gym class with a future NBA All-Star.
We have the class project to prove it!
Takachuk doesn’t talk much in the video, but it’s still hilarious to see two future stars casually hanging out in high school. Who knew they would become what they are today?
Well, apparently they did. According to Tkachuk, the two even lived with each other in their future plans.
“We always joked that when we were older we would be each other’s agents in each other’s games,” Takachuk said via the Calgary Sun. “It wouldn’t have been a good decision.”
While they decided against the idea of the agent, they were clearly close friends and fellow athletes. While Takachuk’s personality has evolved into that of an insect, Tatum doesn’t remember that Takachuk was very upset during his younger days.
