Matthew Eakin was climbing the world’s second highest mountain in northern Pakistan when he went missing last week.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Mr Eakin had died after his body was found by rescuers on Monday.
Writing on Facebook, loved ones described the Sydney local as a passionate adventurer with a big heart.
“He was a kind, passionate, generous and larger than life character with a curious mind,” the post read.
“We are grateful and consoled for the love and support extended to our families from around the world.
Found dead
An Australian climber has been found dead on the top of the world’s second highest mountain after missing a week ago with his Canadian climber.
Sydney man Matthew Eakin embarked on a dream expedition in Pakistan to climb K2 – one of the world’s most challenging peaks to navigate – with two Canadian climbers Justin Dubey-Fahmi and Richard Cartier.
The trio of climbers spent two days at the lower C4 camp at 7,600 meters above sea level, before deciding to make their descent back to base.
“Richard, Matt and I were burned. 16 hours of climbing. Going back to base camp tomorrow,” Mr. Dubey-Fahmi wrote in an update to Facebook on July 22.
“It’s getting cold here. We’re exhausted after these two long days.”
K2
An Australian and a Canadian climber have been found dead on K2, the world’s second highest mountain in Pakistan, which has killed at least three people in recent weeks.
The Himalayan Times identified the Australian climber as Matthew Eakin and the Canadian climber Richard Cartier, after reports that both went missing while descending from Camp 2 to Camp 1 last week.
The Times reported that rescue teams found the bodies of two climbers on Tuesday.
A spokesman for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the death but did not identify the person.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man killed during a climbing expedition in northern Pakistan,” the spokesman said.
“We extend our condolences to his family and friends. We are unable to provide further comment due to our confidentiality obligations.”
Cause of death
A rescue operation has tracked down the body of Matthew Eakin, an Australian man who died while climbing K2, the world’s second highest mountain. ,
The bodies of Mr Eakin and Canadian Richard Cartier were found after both went missing on K2 in Kashmir between Camp 1 (6,000 m) and Camp 2 (6,700 m) in two separate incidents.
“The bodies of the climbers were found at an altitude of about 6,500 meters,” a spokesman for the Alpine Club Pakistan told DPA news agency on Wednesday.
