It was one of several positions Arsenal needed to fill this summer, with Bernd

Leno currently the only serious contender for the Premier League.

The Gunners addressed the issue from January to May by using Matt Ryan, who had joined a loan deal from Brighton & Hove Albion. A popular figure in north London, there was some hope he could return permanently this summer.

Nevertheless, in the end, Ryan ended up with Real Sociedad in Spain. Speaking to Fox’s James Dodd this week, the goalkeeper revealed that his camp had asked about making his loan permanent, but Arsenal weren’t keen enough.

Matt Ryan’s wife, Sarah Marshall Ryan, is a former high school basketball player. He has set many records in Maine Basketball history. Also, when she was just a junior in high school, she earned Maine’s Female Athlete of the Year.

College

Ryan earned many accolades for the 2007 season. He was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year.  He was awarded the 2007 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the nation’s most outstanding college football senior quarterback in the United States. Given annually in the U.S., the other finalists for the 2007 award were Colt Brennan of Hawaii, Brian Brom of Louisville, Dennis Dixon of Oregon and Andre of Kentucky. Woodson (all of whom were drafted in the 2008 NFL Draft).  He was selected to play in the 2008 Senior Bowl. He also won the 2007 Manning Award awarded to the nation’s top quarterback, beating eventual Heisman winner Tim Tebow and eight other finalists for that year’s award: Eric Anz (Tennessee), Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Colt. Brennan (Hawaii ‘i), Chase Daniels (Missouri), Dennis Dixon (Oregon), Graham Harrell (Texas Tech), Pat White (West Virginia) and Andre Woodson (Kentucky). He was named “Eagle of the Year” along with Casey Hill, the first individual champion of Boston College. He finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting that year.

He was featured as the cover athlete for the PS3 version of NCAA Football 09.  In 2016, Boston College retired its jerseys.

Trade

After 14 seasons in which he became the best quarterback in franchise history, Matt Ryan is moving on from the Atlanta Falcons.

Atlanta traded Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts on Monday in exchange for a 2022 third-round draft pick, the team announced.

The Falcons moved quickly to add Ryan’s potential successor, agreeing to a two-year contract with quarterback Marcus Mariota, who is familiar with coach Arthur Smith’s offensive plan from his time with the Tennessee Titans. A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Mariota’s deal is worth two years, $18.75 million.

Smith and Mariota worked together in several capacities over the five years with the Titans, including as Mariota’s six-game starter during the 2019 season. This was Smith’s first year as Titans offensive coordinator

Draft

When the Atlanta Falcons selected Matt Ryan as the third pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, he took a major risk for an already struggling franchise.

There was more to Matt Ryan’s selection of the Falcons than just an evaluation of his talent.

Rumors were swirling until the Falcons actually submitted their draft card with Matt Ryan’s name on it.

Word spread from the Falcons’ battle room that the team’s scouts and general manager Rick McKay wanted to select Glenn Dorsey.

Dorsey, who was picked by Kansas City in fifth place, is widely regarded as the most physically gifted player in the draft.

Dorsey would have been a far less risky pick for the Falcons.

With Dorsey’s strength and speed, he is almost certain to make an immediate impact in the NFL.

But Dorsey is a defensive tackle, and although the position is the backbone of any defense, it is not the most glamorous position on the football field.

Trade grade

At some point this offseason, we’re going to get a day where there’s no crazy trading in the NFL, but yesterday wasn’t that day. I must have been surprised because of all the shocking trades being made in the NFL this year that, in one move, the Colts landed Matt Ryan in a trade with the Falcons.

My one line takeaway from the trade: The Colts got better and the Falcons got worse.

We’re going into the details of the trade in today’s newsletter, plus we’ll take a look at several other QB moves that went on around the NFL on Monday.

Oh, and I haven’t forgotten about free agency. It’s definitely not over yet and we’re still tracking what happens
