Police in England have made an arrest in the death of Minnesota native Adam Johnson, whose throat was slashed by an opposing player’s skate during a game between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League last month.
The arrest was announced on Tuesday – 17 days after the incident – but South Yorkshire Police did not identify the man in custody. In a press release, the department said detectives “arrested a man on suspicion of murder.”
The belief is that the arrested man is Sheffield hockey player Matt Petgrave, whose skate struck Johnson in the neck during an October 28 game. Horrific video of the play showed Johnson falling to the ice and then attempting to skate to the bench while clutching his neck. Blood pooled on the ice and Johnson was later pronounced dead when taken to the hospital.

Sheffield Steelers player Petgrave, 31, slashed Johnson’s throat with his blade when they collided during an ice hockey match in front of 8,000 horrified fans in Sheffield, in what has been described as a ‘freak accident’.
Former Canadian hockey star Sean Avery has suggested Johnson’s life was intentionally killed by Petgrave’s kick – but he declined to call it murder when pressed by Fox host Jesse Waters.
When Waters said Petgrave was a ‘dirty’ player and said it sounded like ‘murder’, Avery said: ‘That’s a very dangerous word to throw around. I’ve seen it, it’s horrible, it’s hard to watch.
