It was confirmed Monday via CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora that the Oakland Raiders’ fling with quarterback Matt Flynn has officially ended. The team released Flynn, but only after paying him a total of $6.5 million for the season. This is only the most recent in a long history of failures by a six-year pro.

So, why did the Raiders project end in failure? Well, that was easily expected when looking at Flynn’s history as a quarterback.

LSU Tigers

Even during his college days, Flynn could not position himself to secure a starting role. In 2004, he served as a backup behind Marcus Randall. After Randall’s departure in 2005, Flynn was offered the opportunity to compete for the starting job against Jamarcus Russell. Flynn lost the competition, allowing Russell to start in 2005 and again in 2006.

Flynn was surrounded by a huge amount of talent on the Tigers’ 2007 roster. Despite leading his team to the BCS National Championship, Flynn did not deliver decent numbers. During the regular season, Flynn threw a total of 17 touchdowns against 10 interceptions and passed the 300-yard passing mark only twice.

It was Flynn’s four-touchdown performance in the title game against Ohio State that enabled the Green Bay Packers to select him in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Teams

Matt Flynn is a former American football quarterback who played most of his career for the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks.

Flynn was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round (209th selection overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. On 23 July, he was signed to a four-year rookie contract during the 2011 season. [17] [18] In 2008, Flynn won the competition for the back-up role for Aaron Rodgers, defeating fellow rookie and second-round pick Brian Brom. Flynn was considered less talented than Brome due to Brome’s superior size, arm and leg movement, as well as the fact that Brome was picked up a lot more in the draft than Flynn. [20]

On December 19, 2010, Flynn made his first NFL debut against the New England Patriots, after starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers was not medically cleared to start. [21] Flynn threw three touchdown passes; Against New England, John Kuhn, James Jones and Greg Jennings were bowled one each but an interception was thrown back by Kyle Arrington for a touchdown in the second half. The game went on until the final game when Flynn, New England with the ball over the 15-yard line, lost it on dismissal. The Packers lost the game 31-27. Flynn completed 23 of 37 passes for 254 yards in the loss. [22]

Flynn was Rodgers’ backup when the Packers won Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011.

On January 1, 2012, Flynn began the final game of the season against the Detroit Lions. He threw 480 yards and six touchdowns in a 45–41 victory, both of which set single-game Packers records.

Wife

Former American football player Matthew Flynn – not to be mistaken with Maroon 5’s drummer Matt Flynn – met his wife, Lacey Minchev, at LSU in 2003.

Flynn was the quarterback on the football team and Minchew was the Golden Girl, a member of the Tigers’ dance team. The pair did not start dating until 2008 and married in 2013.

Minchew is a former Miss Louisiana champ who was convinced by her mother to join the Louisiana State University dance team. His mother was also a Golden Girl, so it clearly means a lot to the family.

Minchev pursued a career in acting and moved to Los Angeles after college, forcing him and Flynn into a long-distance relationship as he began his NFL career.

The couple has three children together, whose pictures Minchu often posts on social media.
