Matthew Martin Lee Carpenter (born November 26, 1985) is an American professional baseball third baseman for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2011 with the St. Louis Cardinals. A left-handed batsman and right-handed thrower, Carpenter stands 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) and weighs 205 pounds (93 kg).

Matt Carpenter was doing his best to separate his feelings from the games he played over the next three days, and he was mostly successful until he was asked about his family’s enthusiasm for returning to St. Gaya – the city where he had so much success in the first 11 years of his MLB career.

After telling a funny story about his 5-year-old son’s confusion about whether his father is still a cardinal or a Yankee, Carpenter’s strong feelings for St. Louis overwhelm his best efforts and force him to avoid more. Had to put his hand on his mouth, raw emotions pour out from every pore of his. Twice during his pregame media availability, Carpenter paused mid-thought, trying to swallow that lump in his throat and preparing himself to well keep the tears in his eyes from running down his cheeks.

Carpenter, 36, was back in a place he never wanted to leave, no tough guy or someone casually brushing off a flurry of emotions inside him. As any fan of the Cardinals was hard-pressed because of his grinder mentality and his outlandish feelings, Carpenter admitted that his attempts to contain those feelings would fail multiple times at Busch Stadium this weekend.

Matt Carpenter became the first second baseman in St. Louis Cardinals history to win the Silver Slugger Award, leading the NL in hits, runs and doubles in 2013, the same year he established himself as a regular and the team’s leadoff hitter . He is a three-time All-Star who has moved around in Cardinal territory.

Matt helped his team to the USA TODAY national high school title in 2002, then hit .289/.391/.366 in 50 games as a part-timer in his freshman year at Texas Christian University. In 2006, he became a starter at third base and hit .349/.432/.411, with only one home run, fielding .977. As a junior, he had scored 5 for 27 with 8 walks before his season ended due to injury. He wore the shirt again and returned to bat in 2008. He was named to the Second Team All-Mountain West. As a fifth year senior, he put up a batting line-up of .333/.470/.662 with 51 walks and 58 runs in 58 games. He finished 15th in NCAA Division I and holds a TCU single-season record with 23 doubles, second in hits (263) and doubles (57), and fourth in RBI (159).
