Retton was a vocal supporter of the Reagan administration and appeared in various television commercials supporting Ronald Reagan as well as at a rally for his reelection campaign just a month after the Olympics in his home state of West Virginia.

Perfect 10 vault

Mary Lou Retton’s preparation for the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games was remarkable. What everyone except a few insiders didn’t know was that the teen gymnastics sensation had arthroscopic surgery just six weeks before the Olympics.

“We did three months of rehab in two weeks,” she said, noting her incredible improvement a decade later.

Not to be outdone, Retton’s performance at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion was even more amazing.

To make up for missing the final two events, Retton – who was about to enter her junior year of high school – posted consecutive perfect 10 scores on floor exercise and vault and became the first American woman to capture a gold medal in the women’s . All-round competition.

“I can’t explain how I felt,” Retton said. “My hair was going up and down. I knew from takeoff, I knew from the run – I just knew it.

Hospitalized

Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton has pneumonia and is in intensive care at a hospital in Texas.

Rayton’s daughter McKenna Kelly shared Rayton’s condition in an Instagram post on Tuesday. Kelly said Retton, 55, who became the first American woman to win an Olympic all-around title, is “fighting for her life” and is not able to breathe on her own.

Kelly began a fundraising campaign on Retton’s behalf for medical expenses. Kelly wrote that Retton does not currently have medical insurance.

Retton was 16 years old when she became an icon of the American Olympic movement during her gold medal-winning performance at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Retton, who grew up in Fairmont, West Virginia, also won two silver and two bronze medals at those Olympics to help bring gymnastics — a sport dominated by Eastern European powers like Romania and the Soviet Union — into the mainstream in America.
