When the Kentucky football team took the field for the 2021 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, it made another milestone official in Mark Stoops’ remarkable tenure as head coach of the Wildcats.

Stoops became the first coach in school history to lead his team to five consecutive bowl games, adding to his long and growing list of achievements during his eight years in Britain. As a program, it matched the school record of five straight postseason appearances, completing 2006–10 under two head coaches.

Even in the brief 2020 season, Stoops added two more achievements: Kentucky’s win in Tennessee was the Wildcats’ first win in Knoxville since 1984; And, the regular-season finale over South Carolina was the Stoops’ 48th victory in Kentucky, placing them second only to the great Paul “Bear” Bryant. The Gator Bowl improved their total to 49.

Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops has agreed to a new contract with the school through the 2027 season.

The Stoops’ new agreement expires on June 30, 2028, and includes a one-year extension guarantee for any season of seven to nine wins and a two-year extension guarantee for any season of 10 or more wins. The contract is in the process of finalizing, at which point Kentucky will release financial terms.

Stoops, 54, is 58-53 in nine seasons at Kentucky and is set to lead the team to its sixth consecutive bowling game. Earlier this year, he became the first Kentucky coach since Paul “Bayer” Bryant in 1950 to start 6-0. A Bowl win would give Kentucky two 10-win seasons out of the last four campaigns. Kentucky has finished second under Stoops three times in the SEC East Division.

“I am excited to see this program continue to rise to national prominence,” Stoops said in a prepared statement. “We are on our way and I am more confident than ever in Kentucky football. I thank President [Ellie] Capilotto and [Athletic Director] Mitch Barnhart for their support. The continuity between us over the past nine years is extremely valuable. And I am looking forward to more success together.

We have a deep care and respect for each other and this will continue even as our family Will move forward. Please respect the privacy of our family during this time.

Prior to Kentucky Football’s 6-0 start to the 2021 season, Mark Stoops was among the 20 highest-paid coaches in college football.

Stoops’ contract revision signed in 2019 set his 2021 salary at $5.25 million. The deal currently runs through the 2025 season, but with another win Stoops will trigger an automatic one-year extension earned for any season in which Kentucky wins seven games. If Kentucky wins 10 games this year, the contract will be extended for an additional year.

Stops’ base pay increases by $250,000 per year during the life of the contract, which includes any additional years triggered by the extension clause.
