Released
The Las Vegas Raiders released veteran cornerback Marcus Peters and safety Roderick Teimer. The team was announced on Monday.
According to ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez, Teamer was arrested on Saturday on misdemeanor DUI and speeding charges.
Vic Tafur of The Athletic said Peters is set to collect a $1.5 million bonus from the team, which will no longer be paid. He was benched midway through Sunday’s 31-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas, leading to his departure.
Peters and head coach Antonio Pierce had a pep talk on the sideline during the game.
Pierce declined to provide any specifics on the matter in his postgame press conference, saying only that it was “the coach’s decision” to not play the two-time All-Pro in the second half.
It appears the sideline exchange was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Tafur reported Sunday night that the Raiders were expected to move on from Peters, who “was almost cut at the beginning of this season.”
The 30-year-old has seen his stock steadily decline since 2019, when he had five interceptions and an NFL-high three pick-sixes en route to his third Pro Bowl nod. The torn ACL destroyed his entire 2021 season, which has also had a clear impact on his performance.
According to Pro Football Reference, in 12 starts with the Raiders, Peters was allowing a 66.1 percent completion rate and 103.2 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks. His missed tackle rate (20.4 percent) is also seventh-highest in the league.
Benched
One day after playing 20 snaps and sitting on the bench in the second quarter, Marcus Peters is no longer with the Las Vegas Raiders. The team waived him Monday afternoon, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur reported on Twitter.
After the game, interim head coach Antonio Pierce said it was a “coaching decision”. When asked on Monday, he did not elaborate on the move.
“We decided to move forward,” Pierce told reporters. “Had a great conversation with him this morning. I’ll leave it at that.”
Peters finished with 43 tackles, five passes defended and an interception return for a touchdown. If the three-time Pro Bowler makes it through waivers, he will be able to sign with the team of his choosing.
BREAKING: The Raiders have released CB Marcus Peters. He had an interception return for a TD in Week 8, but was taken off the bench last night. The move gives the team a $1.5 million incentive that Peters was set to earn.
Rumors
Veteran cornerback Marcus Peters is moving on from the Raiders.
A report Monday morning indicated that the team would part ways with Peters before returning from the Week 13 bye, and Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com reports that the team has officially waived Peters.
Peters started every game for the Raiders this season, but was benched during Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs. He had 43 tackles, five passes defended and a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown.
If Peters clears waivers, he will be free to sign with any team as a free agent and his experience could make him land with another team in need of help in the defensive backfield for the stretch run.
Net Worth
His net worth is around $14 million. Marcus Peters signed a 3-year extension with the Baltimore Ravens on December 28, 2019.
Marcus Peters, born January 9, 1993, is an American football cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL).
