As the NFL landscape changed once again, Mariota found himself signing a two-year contract through March 2022 worth $18.75 million with the Atlanta Falcons. However, in February 2023, the Falcons released Mariota, resulting in a significant cap clearance of $12 million.

Taking advantage of the new opportunity, Mariota joined the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2023, signing a one-year contract worth $5 million. This latest move offers him a fresh start and a chance to contribute to a new team.

Draft pick

The 2015 NFL Draft was the 80th annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises to select newly eligible football players. It took place at the Auditorium Theater and Grant Park in Chicago from April 30 to May 2. The last fifty NFL Drafts (since 1965) were held in New York City. The 2015 NFL Draft featured an outdoor component. The first draft to be done was where fans would be able to see the commissioner on the Auditorium Theater stage from across the street in the park; This area was called Draft Town.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the first pick because they had the worst record in the league the previous season. The Arizona Cardinals made the final selection in the draft, commonly referred to as Mr. Irrelevant.

Eventually the Eagles took the deal. After years of endless speculation about Chip Kelly’s Eagles possibly drafting Marcus Mariota, the former first-round pick has finally landed in Philadelphia… now as a backup.

A league source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia that the Eagles are negotiating a one-year deal with Mariota that is worth $5 million and could be worth as much as $8 million. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the deal.

And Mariota also posted “Go Birds” on his Instagram Story with an eagle emoji.

Mariota, 29, will become the Eagles’ new backup quarterback after Jalen Hurts. Former backup Gardner Minshu left for the Indianapolis Colts in free agency on Thursday. Third-line Ian Book is still on the roster.

Mariota was once a star at Oregon, where he won the Heisman Trophy and was one of the top prospects in the 2015 draft class. With Kelly in charge of the Eagles, there were a lot of rumors that the Eagles were going to trade Mariota to land him.

But instead, Mariota was the second choice in the draft for Tennessee and Kelly was released before the end of the 2015 season. Since then, Howie Roseman has again been in charge of the front office and has built two different Super Bowl rosters. Adding Mariota after eight years is a nice touch from Roseman.

Last season, Mariota started 13 games for the Falcons. He had a 5–8 record, completing 61.3% of his passes for 2,219 yards with 15 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He was fine but that organization is moving forward with Desmond Ridder.

And at this point in his career, Mariota makes sense as a high-level backup. He was a starter with the Titans for five seasons, but was then a backup with the Raiders before his one season with the Falcons. In his career, Mariota has a 34–40 record, completing 62.6 percent of his passes with 92 touchdowns and 54 interceptions.
