He began winning races while in high school, and won three Indy Pro races after graduating from high school. His first year on the professional circuit was quite successful, as he finished in the Top 5 in his first Indy 500 race, and then won the following race at Infineon Raceway. The British driver was racing and participating in a special challenge with Sam Schmidt Motorsports at the 2011 season finale in Las Vegas, attempting to win a large prize money after starting from the very back of the field.
However, Wheeldon was involved in a pile-up on lap 11 of the race and hit the barriers in an air crash. He suffered serious head injuries in the accident, and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. He was only 33 years old at the time of his death.
Wheeldon had won the Indy 500 only five months earlier, which was only a part-time season of racing as he could not secure a permanent cockpit at the time. He had previously won the Indy 500 in 2005, as well as the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2006. The night before his death, he had signed a deal to return to IndyCar on a full-time basis for 2012, racing for Andretti Autosport.

In his rookie debut at Homestead-Miami Speedway at the New York Stock Exchange Dallara Honda on March 26, 2006, Andretti started in 13th place, but broke half a shaft in his first pitstop, forcing him out of the race.
With his Rookie of the Year performance at the Indianapolis 500 in May, he became the third Andretti to finish in the top five in his first Indianapolis 500 appearance, after father Michael (5th in the 1984 Indianapolis 500) and grandfather Mario, who finished third. The 2012 season was a struggle for Andretti. He started the year with 14th place in St. Petersburg, 11th in Alabama, 25th in Long Beach and 14th in So Paulo. He led the most laps (59) in Indianapolis, but hit the wall of Turn 1 on lap 188. Andretti continued the season with season-best finishes of 11th in Detroit, 17th in Texas, 15th in Milwaukee and Iowa, where he finished second. Following his runner-up in Iowa, he finished 16th in Toronto, 14th in Edmonton, 8th in Mid-Ohio, and 25th in Sonoma. In Baltimore, Andretti scored another finish in the back of the field, finishing 14th. As the season was about to end, he finished the 8th race, finishing the second pole position of his career at Fontana. Andretti finished 16th on the points standings.
