Did get drafted

The Falcons find a future QB with Malik Willis.

One of the biggest surprises in the first round of the NFL Draft wasn’t more about what happened, but more about what didn’t.

Malik Willis, considered by many analysts to be the top quarterback in the draft, did not hear his name.

Willis, who turns 23 the following month, threw 2857 yards and 27 touchdowns in his junior season last year. He also demonstrated his wheels running for 878 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Vikings

Spielman is someone who is all too familiar with this year’s quarterback prospects as he was evaluating the group’s final fall while he was still employed at Minnesota.

Of the signal-callers to be selected in the 2022 NFL Draft later this month, former Liberty quarterback Malik Willis is the one who seems to stick out the most for the former Vikings general manager.

Here’s what Spielman had to say about Willis in his discussion with Breyer.

“I had the opportunity to see him play live at Syracuse this fall. He didn’t have much help around. But if you look at last year, when he played NC State, he played a lot of big school last year, taping his juniors. Since then, they haven’t given him a chance to win games with as much talent as some of these quarterbacks around him.

So I always thought he was most interesting because of his athletic skill set, [and] because of his arm strength.

In addition to his comments about Willis, the former Minnesota general manager told Breyer that he thinks former Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett is “most prepared” of the passing possibilities available in this year’s NFL Draft.

Who picked

The quarterback was a big topic of conversation in this year’s NFL Draft. Without a head and shoulders above the rest of the class a la Trevor Lawrence, the discussion generally turned to whether teams could ignore the hand size of Pitt’s Kenny Pickett or the rival quality of Liberty’s Malik Willis.

When the dust settled, Pickett was the only quarterback taken in the first round. The Steelers placed him in Pittsburgh with the 20th overall pick. This left Willis in the Green Room in Las Vegas after Round 1, with Nkobe Dean, Kyler Gordon and Matt Coral not selected in the first 32 picks as attendees in Vegas.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who followed Willis throughout this process that even after he was elected, he was humble and kind.

Willis’ character was never under question. In fact, it’s one of the reasons he made the jump to the draft board. The Flames quarterback made headlines by giving his NFL Combine equipment to a homeless man in Indianapolis, and he appeared to be nothing happier than going through the arduous draft process. 22-year-old Willis has been under a microscope since his college career ended, and he has totally outgrown it.

Drafted

Only one quarterback and no running back went in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. Man, times have changed so much. Watch some more of them to go on Friday night as the 32 teams reunite for the second round.

Here’s a guess how it plays out:

33. Buccaneers (from the Jaguars): Logan Hall, DE, Houston — Tampa is always on the lookout for an athletic defensive lineman and the 6-foot-6, 278-pound Hall likes new coach Todd Bowles.

34. Vikings (from Lions): Kyler Gordon, CB, WA — Minnesota continues to upgrade its secondary with a 6-foot, 200-pound corner that runs 4.4 40.

35. Titans (from the Jets): Bernhard Raiman, T, Central Michigan – Tennessee needs a perfect tackle to start immediately, and Raiman is that man.

36. Giants: Malik Willis, QB, Liberty – Daniel Jones’ refusal to exercise his fifth-year option opens up all kinds of possibilities. Willis like crude but strong weapons.
