A 2015 tweet from Mack Jones announced he’d never seen snow before Monday night’s Patriots-Bills game, but the rookie had a plan to stay warm in 32 degree weather and high winds, and that’s an idea. Which is all the way back to Brady.

During Brady’s time with the Pats in New England, QB wore an XPS scuba suit to keep warm in extreme temperatures. Brady passed the idea on to backup Brian Hoyer, who of course relayed the information to Mack before Monday’s game.

The weather conditions at Orchard Park were less than ideal, so Bill Belichick took the extreme Monday night, deciding to play football. Mack Jones threw just three passes for the New England Patriots in Monday’s 14-10 win over the Buffalo Bills, completing 2 of 3 for 19 yards without a touchdown and no interception.

Jones’ three pass attempts were the fewest by a winning team since at least 1991. He completed just one for 12 yards in the first half and went 1 for 2 for 7 yards in the second half – a performance that will surely go down in the history books.

The Patriots had the fewest pass attempts in franchise history and the fewest by any team since 1974. New England ran for 222 yards – on 49 plays – 46 times. Except for two Jones at the end of the game, New England actually had 44 carries for 230 yards – an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

With strong winds, the Patriots really had no choice in the matter.

Nick saban trash talk

Mack Jones showed tremendous patience in Alabama as he waited for his opportunity behind both Jalen Hirts and Tua Tagovailoa, but his two years of sitting on the bench certainly didn’t shake his confidence. Jones was so confident in his abilities, in fact, that he even trash-talked Nick Saban when he was an underclassman.

With Jones’ stock rising in the NFL Draft, Trey Wingo did some research on the star quarterback and came up with a terrifying story in a 2019 piece from Sports Illustrated. In it, former Alabama safety Jared Maiden recalled a time in practice when Jones was burning down the defense of the Crimson Tide as a scout team quarterback. He kept adding deep passes to wide receiver Tyrell Shavers, and eventually Saban told Jones to turn it off so the team could work on other stuff.

Pass attempts

The Patriots asked Jones to throw the ball against the Bills only three times a day.

Their limited production had little to do with the rookie passerby and more to do with the environment. Playing the game in windy conditions, the Patriots relied on their run game to get the job done. It did, finishing with 230 yards on 44 non-knee-down attempts.

As a result, Jones’ day mostly consisted of handing the ball – something he was not unhappy about.

“I’m just trying to win,” he said during his postgame press conference. “It was cool that we scored more runs than the other team, and we did well. Josh was just keeping calm, and he kept calling pretending he knew that would work. All 11 in it People engaged. It doesn’t matter how many times you run or throw it, everyone will be happy as long as you win.”
