Contract
As currently built, there was no room for Luke Voight on these New York Yankees.
He needed to be a little more left-handed, a little more athletic.
Voight’s days at the pinstripe were numbered again, once lefty-hitting first baseman Anthony Rizzo was signed to a free-agent contract.
“Something was going to happen in the last day or two,” Voight said Friday afternoon at Old McKennie Field, his truck parked nearby and its gear already full.
Just before the opening of the Yankees’ exhibition against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Voight – scheduled to bat cleanup and play first base – was traded to the San Diego Padres.

Let’s go down a list of chemistry-altering moves for the worse the New York Yankees have made over the past few years, shall we? Before we get to the Luke Voight-Anthony Rizzo situation, it’s best we shed light on what else has happened.
After the 2019 season, he let go of Didi Gregorius, which was understandable, but the way he did it was certainly not respectable and it can be assumed that it unfairly upset his close teammates.
After the 2020 season, the Yankees reportedly had no contact with Masahiro Tanaka, who spent seven years with the franchise before eventually deciding to return to Japan. How do you repay those who have given their all?
Then came the 2021 trade deadline, when he transferred Luis Sessa, who was famous along with several big-name Yankees players in a pay dump trade with the Cincinnati Reds…. Not to mention, Sesa was finally coming into its own. After the 2021 season ended, the Yanks dumped Aaron Judge’s best bud in Tyler Wade, despite not having a shortstop on the roster. Trading Jio Ursella also took its toll this week.
College
Voight attended Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Missouri. He played for Lafayette’s baseball team in his first three years as a first baseman and third baseman, and as a catcher in his senior year. He also played on his football team as a fullback and middle linebacker.
Voight received interest from NCAA Division I teams as a football player, but shoulder injuries ended his football career. Voight was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 32nd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, but he did not sign. Voight attended Missouri State University, where he played college baseball for the Missouri State Bears for four years.
Stats

[34] Voight became active on May 11, 2021, following a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. On June 23, Voight hit his first career walk-off hit, an RBI single that defeated Tyler Wade to beat the Kansas City Royals 6. -5.
On July 6, Voight had his first five-hit game of career, going 5-for-6 with four singles, one double, three RBIs, and one run during a 12–1 win against the Seattle Mariners. . Voight was limited by injuries, causing the Yankees to acquire first baseman Anthony Rizzo at the 2021 trade deadline. Voight appeared in 68 games during the 2021 season, scoring 11 home runs in 213 at bat.
