Just as the 2013 AIS-AFL Academy camp wound up around picturesque Lake Como in northern Italy, St Kilda recruit and inventory manager, Tony Elshaug, received an important piece of information from an unexpected source.
While players remained at the AIS High Performance Training Center in nearby Gaviret, parents, staff and recruiters explored one of Italy’s most idyllic destinations, halfway to George Clooney, Madonna and Sir Richard Branson.
It was here that Elshaug sat in the back of the bus next to a West Australian umpire, who provided him with information about a player Saint would draft late in the first round at the end of the year. That player was Luke Dunstan.
“I was sitting on a bus in Italy that was going around Lake Como and I was sitting next to the umpire on the trip, who umpired the AIS game at the MCG earlier in the year,” Elshaug told cents.com. Friday Night National Draft.
“And we were sitting there and talking about the players around midfield and he said there is no doubt that the whole midfield handled much better when Luke was in center square.
Injury
Luke Dunston was brilliant in his return to the senior ranks, collecting 26 touches, 13 tackles and seven clearances, limiting Ben Cunnington’s influence.
The midfielder has scored 146 disposals and eight goals in his last four matches at the VFL level.
Dunston credits his month to the Zebras for regaining their instincts and completing four-quarter performances.
To say this has been a year and a half for Luke Dunston must have been pretty tough.
A season-ending pectoral injury in 2020 ended his follow-up campaign in an eight-place finish at the Trevor Barker Award, while this season his magnet has been parked on the wrong side of the whiteboard for all but one game .
Delisted
The former St Luke will play Dunstan in 2022, being acquired by Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent.
The Demons get a 26-year-old who fell out of favor with St Kilda but showed he still has a lot to offer at senior level with an excellent stretch of last season’s game.

In Round 1 2014, he played his first game for St Kilda against Melbourne. He was awarded an AFL Rising Star nomination for his performance.[1]
Dunston became an integral part of St Kilda’s midfield during 2014 before being dropped after Round 19 for shoulder surgery. Following his final game in Round 23, St Kilda icon and Dunston’s mentor Lenny Hayes handed his 7th Gurnsey to Dunston.[2] Shortly thereafter, Dunston signed a contract extension, keeping him among the Saints until 2017.
