What happened

Ahead of the start of the regular season, the San Antonio Spurs broke up their roster with some surprising leeway from Croatia’s 2019 first-round pick, Luka Samnik. He had the 6-foot-10 frame and shooting ability coming in that draft to make an NBA impact, with the main roster following two weak go-arounds and questions on effort that never happened.

After unclaimed on a waiver, Samnik signed a two-way contract with the New York Knicks, according to Shams Charnia of The Athletic and Stadium. At just 21 years old, he has a chance to recover from a poor start to his career and find value elsewhere.

After a string of successful selections in the last five years of the Spurs draft, Samnice marks a rare omission.

The San Antonio Spurs had two first-round draft picks to work with in 2019, the result of a Kawhi Leonard trade with the Toronto Raptors. Number 29 overall came from a team north of the border and number 19 was Spurs’ own. Samnic went to the east, but Keldon Johnson, now a longstanding, youthful building block of this team’s next iteration, went to the second of the two selections, albeit lower than expected in the first round.
