Dallas Mavericks star point guard Luka Doncic is expected to exit Game 1 of the team’s first-round playoff series against the Utah Jazz on Saturday, according to The Athletic. The Mavericks announced Tuesday that Doncic was diagnosed with a left calf strain after undergoing an MRI earlier this week, and is listed as a “suspect” in the team’s most recent injury report. According to ESPN, there is “significant concern” that Doncic may miss Game 2 in the series as well.

It was first reported by ESPN that there were doubts within the Mavericks organization that Doncic would be set to play against the Jazz in the first match of Saturday’s series – which ends at 12 noon. Local Time—who reported the injury was “more than just a mild calf strain.”

“The Mavericks are preparing a lot for the prospect of not only [Doncic] not being in Game 1, but maybe even Game 2 on Monday. Weekend,” Adrian Wojnarowski said on “NBA Countdown.” “I think you can expect it to go down the wire on Friday, Saturday. But there’s a lot of doubt, there’s concern about how soon he’ll be available in this playoff series against Utah.”

Doncic suffered an injury in Dallas’ regular season final against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. With the Mavericks 18 points in the third quarter, Doncic landed awkwardly after getting up for a pass and immediately groaned in pain as he grabbed his left calf.

When the Dallas Mavericks earned a home-court advantage in the playoffs for the first time since winning the NBA title 11 years ago, they could face many games without their top player.

Star point guard Luka Doncic strained his left calf in the regular-season finale and didn’t practice all week for the Western Conference first-round opener against the Utah Jazz on Saturday (1 ET, ESPN). Doncic is listed as a suspect for Game 1.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Doncic will miss Game 1 and there are concerns about his position for Game 2 as the team takes a day-to-day approach to the injury.

The Mavericks went 36-12 on New Year’s Eve after a 16-18 start and moved up to fourth seed. The fifth seed finished 4-7 to fall down to the Jazz Mavericks.

In a meeting that was crucial for Dallas to hold on to Utah, Doncic scored 32 points in a 114–100 victory, while defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert and 3-point threat Bojan Bogdanovic sat for the Jazz.

Now the only NBA player to have at least 28 points, eight rebounds and eight assists can be sidelined, while Utah under Donovan Mitchell is close to full force. Dallas has not won a playoff series since the title season, losing six times in the first round.

On Tuesday, the Mavericks announced that an MRI confirmed a left calf strain for Doncic.

According to the team’s official release, “Doncic has started treatment and there is no timetable for his return. An update will be made available.”

The Mavericks will host the Jazz for Game 1 on Saturday, April 16, giving Doncic a tight turnaround to be available for a playoff start.

According to Charania, Doncic’s right calf straining will force him out of the series opener.

Game 2 of the series falls on Monday, April 18, eight days after Doncic was injured.

According to injury analyst Jeff Stotts, “the average time lost to calf strains in the NBA this season was 16 days.” ESPN’s Tim McMahon noted that Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert missed three weeks this season with a mild calf strain. Injury specialist and sports medicine doctor Jesse Morse said that “calf strains don’t heal quickly or very well.”

Of course, this is all speculation, as every case is different.
