Luis Severino (born February 20, 1994) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2015. After a rough 2016 season, he broke through as one of the league’s best pitchers in 2017, was named an All-Star and finished third in the American League Cy Young Award vote. He was also named an All-Star in 2018. He missed the 2019 and 2021 seasons and all the 2020 due to various injuries.

Nationality
With a three-quarter delivery, Severino currently throws three pitches: a four-seam fastball averaging 96 mph, a slider, and a shift. His fastball hit 101 mph in 2017. speed was observed. His average spin rate for sliders was at No. 2 in MLB (2910 rpm) behind Garrett Richards (2919 rpm) in 2018.

Luis Severino has struck a deal with the New York Yankees on a four-year, $40 million extension, the team announced.
ESPN’s Jeff Passon first reported the deal.
Passan noted that the deal includes a fifth-year club option.

2023 (club option): $15 million with $2.75 million buyout
The expansion could be a maximum of $52.25 million over five years. The deal buys four arbitration years and potentially a free-agent season for Severino. If the club opts out, the right-hander now has to enter free agency before the age of 30.
An extension comes the same day Severino and the Yankees were scheduled for an arbitration hearing. The pitcher requested $5.25 million for the upcoming season, while the Yankees countered at $44 million.
Severino revealed earlier this week that he expects to avoid the hearing.
“No player wants to be in that position,” Severino said on Wednesday, according to the New York Post’s George A. King III. “I’ve heard a lot that it’s not fun.”
Ultimately the two sides reached an agreement.
The expansion closes the New York ace at a favorable price to the team for the foreseeable future. Severino is coming off a season in which he went 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA and 1.145 WHIPs in 32 starts, scoring 220 hitters in 191.1 innings.

The young Severino was informed by Luis Severino, a friend affiliated with the Dominican-based International Prospect League, about the organization’s signing plans in which Rafael Severino has been competing recently.
“He was passing out. He couldn’t believe it,” Luis Severino recalled a phone conversation he had with his brother at Yankee Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone was delighted with the news, and was happy to hear about the young pitcher’s potential.
“Yippie… sign me up for that,” Boone said. “It’s definitely nice to have another Severino in the mix.”
As the 24-year-old Yankees explained to his younger brother, this is the first step in a potential big league career.
