Arsenal played with 10 men for over an hour, but were able to withstand pressure from Liverpool to claim a goalless draw in the first leg of the teams’ Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The crucial moment of the game came in the 24th minute, when Arsenal’s Granit Xaka was sent off to deny Diogo Jota a clear goal-scoring opportunity with a high leg that dropped Liverpool ahead outside the Arsenal penalty area.

After Granite Zaka’s moment of madness within the opening half hour reduced Arsenal to 10 men, it looked as if Anfield was ready to explode at any moment.

Never did it.

Arsenal did nothing less than a daring team effort to keep the Liverpool team devoid of any scoring ideas and send the EFL Cup semi-finals back to the Emirates with a 0-0 scoreline and matchups. The Gunners could very well have surrendered once Zacca was sent off in the rain and Cedric was withdrawn with a concussion, but instead Mikel Arteta circled a masterpiece, as Ben White did. Led the monumental defensive effort, while Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli added flair.

Alison – 7 (out of 10)
That this was his first debut in the competition explains how Klopp has approached the competition over the years, but in terms of shot-stopping, he had little to do.

A shaky pass from the side, was content and confident on the ball – came out of his line quickly and brilliantly to deny Saka, and even found himself on throw-in duty.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 4
It was the kind of performance you were expecting after being isolated from Covid and returning to training just a few days back.

A night filled with a handful of blocked shots and lackluster corner deliveries, his stride after winning the ball had flashes of breaking, but everything seemed to delay a second.

Arsenal managed to hold on for more than an hour after Granit Xaka’s first-half red card to leave Anfield with a 0–0 draw in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final with Liverpool.

The Swiss midfielder was sent off on the edge of the box in the 23rd minute after catching a high boot to Diogo Jota’s chest to deny him a scoring opportunity.

Liverpool without the pair Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, Jurgen Klopp looked toothless in the attack despite selecting his strongest available XI.

Takumi Minamino missed the home team’s best opportunity in the 89th minute when he scored a dangerous low drive from Neko Williams before being cleared by Ben White in extra time.

Arsenal deserved a draw after a solid rearguard performance, and the game had its best chance – before Minamino’s poor miss – as Saka forced a save from Alisson during the second half.

Liverpool started the semi-finals in the usual way, turning back the visitors early, but they were unusually in possession. He struggled to make a clear opening, especially after the ouster of Zaka, much to the dismay of Klopp and the home fans.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be encouraged by his side’s determination not to wield at Anfield and now have home advantage to look forward to as both sides aim to book their place in February’s final against Chelsea at Wembley.
