LIV Golf is a professional golf tour, financed by the Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Public Investment Fund controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The name LIV is an abbreviation for the Roman numeral 54. The reference is the score if each hole was birded on a par-72 course and the number of holes played in LIV events. The first LIV Golf Invitational Series event began on 9 June 2022 at the Centurion Club near London, England.

There was no shortage of headline moments at the opening press conference for the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

The event begins Thursday and features players such as No. 1 ranked Dustin Johnson and superstar Phil Mickelson, among notable names to embark on the new venture. To preview it, the league held an inaugural news conference on Tuesday at Centurion Golf Club in St Albans, England.

Several players were asked about the league, a startup led by former Australian golf star Greg Norman as a challenger to the PGA Tour. It is controversial, in large part because it is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has ties to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Saudi Arabian government. The invite also plans to stop at two courses owned by Donald Trump.

LIV will have seven regular-season events and a team championship in late October. After England, the remaining stops are in Portland, New Jersey, Boston, Chicago, Bangkok, Saudi Arabia and Miami.
