LIV Golf is a professional golf tour, financed by the Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund Public Investment Fund controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The name LIV is an abbreviation for the Roman numeral 54. The reference is the score if each hole was birded on a par-72 course and the number of holes played in LIV events. The first LIV Golf Invitational Series event began on 9 June 2022 at the Centurion Club near London, England.

LIV Golf players react to PGA Tour suspension.

Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson launched tee shots at the Saudi-funded golf league on Thursday, and the PGA Tour said its players are no longer welcome, even though they have already resigned.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan took a firm stand on his pledge that players can choose to tour one or the other, but not both.

Those who had resigned from the PGA Tour – Graeme McDowell said he had done so 30 minutes before he did – were no longer eligible on any PGA Tour circuits. Those who remained, such as Mickelson, were suspended.

“These players have made their own choices or their own financial-based reasons,” Monahan said in a memo calling for his membership. “But they can’t demand the same PGA Tour membership benefits, views, opportunities and platforms as you.”

Ian Poulter said he would appeal the decision. McDowell said he wanted to “lay a high moral ground” by resigning to try to keep litigation to a minimum. He thinks suspension is a healthy way to go about business.

The first event of the controversial LIV Golf Series began outside London on Thursday.

The PGA Tour has announced that all 17 players competing in the controversial Saudi-funded, breakaway competition will be suspended from their events for the foreseeable future.

St. Albans has $25 million in prize money at the Centurion Club, of which $5 million is for the team event, making it the most lucrative event in golf history.

It is the first of eight tournaments scheduled to series in 2022, culminating with a final event at the Trump National Doral in Miami in October.

It’s impossible to know what the field, or the concept as a whole, will look like from that point on, but for now there are 48 players – including the likes of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson – stepping into the unknown this week for the inaugural tournament.

Former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel drew a five-under par 65 to take the lead in the first three days of golf’s divisive new series.

After months of speculation and controversy, the first day of competition for the new LIV Golf League is in the books, with the LIV Golf Invitational Series starting in London on Thursday.

Charl Schwartzel and Henny du Plessis, from South Africa, lead the field after the first round. Schwartzel took the lead on Thursday after posting a 5-under 65, with a du Plessis 1 shot back at 4 under. Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson finished seventh after shooting 1 under 69 each.

After the tee-off, the PGA Tour suspended the 17 members participating in the competition. Players participating in LIV events are ineligible to participate in the PGA Tour or any other tour approved by it. Players participating in future LIV golf events will face similar punishment.
