LIV Golf (/lɪv/) is a professional golf tour financed by the Public Investment Fund, the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Saudi Arabia. The name LIV is a reference to the Roman numeral of 54 if each hole in the par-72 course was birded and the number of holes played in LIV events. The first LIV Golf Invitational Series event began on 9 June 2022 at the Centurion Club near London, England.

That number—the prize money for this individual event—is completely covered by mind-boggling incentives reportedly paid to some of the world’s top players to sign up as members of the LIV Golf Tour. Earlier in the week, news surfaced about $150-$175 million that Dustin Johnson has been paid to come on board. The news about Johnson, who at the time was widely expected to be the most high-profile player to leave the PGA Tour for LIV golf, has since become old hat. It’s not launching this week, but there are even bigger names ahead of the next LIV golf event—Patrick Reed and big hit Bryson DeChambeau. DeChambeau’s defection is a concern for the PGA Tour. One of the most popular stars of American golf and certainly one of the game’s most interesting characters has made him a favorite with the galleries. His absence is likely to impact the return on investment for sponsors and ticket sales at events.

South African Charl Schwartzel won the opener, claiming $4 million in prize money. Meanwhile, Oosthuizen’s Stinger GC won the team event and won a share of $3m in prize money. A similar purse and a breakdown of the prize money are on offer at the second tournament at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Oregon.

The ground for the event is stronger than the opener, signing up players such as Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reid, Abraham Anser, Brooks Koepka and Matthew Wolff. Controversially, it takes place at the same time as the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic. After that, the third event in New Jersey will be played at the same time as the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Michigan.
