Sixteen years after falling silver in Torino, 36-year-old Lindsay Jacobellis won the snowboard cross big final and eventually captured Olympic gold, as well as giving Team USA its first title of the 2022 Olympics.

The year was 2006 and Jacobellis was the world champion. She had a whole family in Torino and was in favor of winning the gold. In a game that could involve accidents at almost every turn, Jacobelli’s final wreck could have been prevented.

The then 20-year-old had a difficult starting position. She managed to ride a low line to avoid contact which almost immediately knocked out two of her fellow contestants.

As the race continued, more of his competitors crashed and Jacobellis’ lead increased. She was all alone at every camera angle – about 50 yards ahead. It was virtually an inaccessible lead in the snowboard cross, or so everyone thought.

On the second-to-last jump, Jacobellis went down on a section of the course that no one had previously fallen on. It wasn’t due to an equipment malfunction or something easily explainable, but rather something even worse – showboating. It was the worst rookie mistake that could have happened. Jacobellis attempted a back-side method trick and went to grab her board. The grab recovered, but after making contact with the ground, Lindsay found herself on her back edge and then on the ground too far.
