Retire

A dismayed Lewis Hamilton has spoken out in the Formula 1 world after dropping a cryptic hint at his potential retirement following a controversial end to the championship campaign.

Hamilton was denied a record-breaking eighth world title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after a bizarre stewards’ reign saw rival Max Verstappen end the final lap neck-and-neck with him, while racing on the better put.

Appeal

Mercedes has officially confirmed its decision to drop its appeal over the FIA’s rejection of its initial protest regarding the final lap of Sunday’s controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Silver Arrows have been weighing their options behind closed doors over the past few days following Max Verstappen’s maiden Drivers’ Championship win at the Yas Marina circuit.

Knighted

He was joined by his mother, Carmen Lockhart, and was all smiles as he posed for pictures in the palace quadrangle. Sir Jack Brabham, 36, followed in the footsteps of Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart, becoming the fourth Grand Prix driver to be knighted, and the first to be awarded the honor while still competing.

Hamilton was recognized on the New Year’s honors list after a record-breaking 2020, in which he eclipsed Michael Schumacher’s all-time win count and emulated the German by winning a seventh world title. But on Sunday, Mercedes driver’s Red Bull rival Max Verstappen claimed his first Formula One world title after a highly controversial one-lap shootout in Abu Dhabi following his season-long fight with Hamilton.

The deployment of the safety car after a late crash at the Yas Marina circuit erased the lead Hamilton had made over the Dutchman, and Verstappen had the advantage as he was using new tyres.

Lewis Hamilton has been knighted by the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle after a dramatic denial of history at the season-end Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Britain was seen speaking to Prince Charles at Windsor Castle, moments after receiving his knighthood on Wednesday morning.

Sir Lewis has become the fourth F1 driver to be knighted after Sir Jackie Stewart in 2001, Sir Stirling Moss in 2000 and Sir Jack Brabham in 1979.

The motorsport icon was denied a record eighth title in Abu Dhabi on Sunday as Max Verstappen claimed his first championship under controversial circumstances.

Hamilton was on his way to an unprecedented eighth world title on Sunday, edging out arch title rival Verstappen in the remaining laps by 11 seconds. But an last-gasp crash for Nicolas Latifi dramatically changed the landscape of the race and the title fight.

Robbed

Max Verstappen won his first Formula One World Championship title last night, with Lewis Hamilton in a performance that dramatically (and controversially) went into the final lap, with some F1 fans declaring Hamilton “booty”.

Two racing drivers were on top of the highly anticipated final race of the season and Hamilton appeared to win his eighth title with a comfortable lead over Verstappen in the closing laps of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

But of course, you have to expect the unexpected in motorsport as a late crash from Williams driver Nicolas Latifi with just six laps to go threw a curveball and eventually changed the course of the race.
