The Formula 1 star, 37, who is set to start a new season with Mercedes in Bahrain this weekend, said he was making the changes to honor his mother. He said: “I’m really proud of my family name. My mother’s name is Larbelestier and I’m about to name it after myself. “I really don’t fully understand the whole idea that women lose their names when they get married and I really want my mother’s name to continue with the name Hamilton.”

Asked when the change would happen, the seven-time world champion replied: “Hopefully soon. We are working on it.” Hamilton’s father Anthony and his mother Carmen separated when Lewis was two years old.

Lewis Hamilton has said that he is in the process of changing his name and in the process of incorporating his mother’s maiden name, Larbelestier. The seven-time Formula One world champion revealed his decision to the crowd at the 2022 Dubai Expo ahead of this weekend’s season-opening Grand Prix in Bahrain.

“It would mean winning the world [an eighth title] for my family,” Hamilton said. “It means a lot to me to know that, for example, I am really proud of my family name, Hamilton. “None of you will know that my mother’s name is Larbelestier, and I’m about to name it after myself.

“I don’t fully understand the whole idea that women lose their names when they get married, and I really want my mother’s name to continue with the name Hamilton.” Hamilton’s mother Carmen and his father, Anthony, separated when Hamilton was young. Both Carmen and Anthony later remarried, and Carmen took the surname of her second husband, Lockhart.

Lewis Hamilton has announced that he will be changing his name to include his mother’s surname – Larbelestier. The F1 star said he wants his mother’s surname to continue with him. Speaking at the Dubai Expo, he explained: “I am really proud of my family name: Hamilton. And I’m gonna name it after myself.

“Because I really don’t fully understand why women lose their names when people get married. “I really want his name to continue with the name Hamilton.”

Hamilton has a close relationship with both of his parents – Carmen and Anthony – who divorced when he was just two years old.

Hamilton was raised by his mother until the age of 12, along with his half-sisters Nicola and Samantha.

He then moved to live with father Anthony, stepmother Linda and his half-brother Nicholas.
