Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season and join Formula One rivals Ferrari on a multi-year deal in 2025.

The 39-year-old signed a new two-year deal with Mercedes just last summer.

However, it is understood that his contract included a break clause after one year, which the Briton has chosen to activate.

Hamilton said he was “very proud” of the success he had achieved in 11 years with Mercedes.

Leave mercedes

Lewis Hamilton says his call to leave Mercedes was one of the “toughest decisions” he has made in Formula 1, as his exit for Ferrari was confirmed on Thursday night.

At the end of a dramatic day of events in which Hamilton’s bombshell move sent F1 into shock, Mercedes ended speculation in the evening when it announced the seven-time champion would leave the team at the end of the year.

As predicted, it added that Hamilton has activated an exit clause in his contract that makes him free to join Ferrari for 2025.

Speaking for the first time about calls to end his long association with Mercedes, Hamilton said: “I have spent an amazing 11 years with this team and I am extremely proud of what we have achieved together.

“Mercedes has been a part of my life since I was 13 years old. It’s a place I grew up in, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. But time came for me It’s the right move to make and I’m excited to take on a new challenge.

Bono

The seven-time world champion has signed a two-year contract extension with Mercedes to remain on the F1 grid until the end of the 2025 season, ending months of speculation over his future.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Hamilton confirmed that ‘Bono’ will be staying with him during that period.

The pair are in their 11th season working together since Hamilton joined Mercedes a decade ago in 2013.

“Yeah, Bono is stuck! I’m very fortunate,” Hamilton said. “Then again, this is also history.

“I don’t think there has ever been an engineer and driver pairing for this long. We are setting records.”
