(NEXSTAR) – When Cleveland last hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 1997, LeBron James was just 12 years old. Twenty-five years later and nearly 20 years into his career, James, speaking with The Athletic, indicated that retirement may no longer be far off.
James, a forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, will become a free agent after next season. Where he goes after that depends on where his son, Bronie James, plays.
“My last year will be played with my son,” James told The Athletic. “Wherever Bronie is, I’ll be there. I’ll do whatever it takes to play with my son for a year. It’s not about the money at the time.”
Bronie is currently a junior in high school, which means he is not eligible to enter the NBA Draft until 2024, unless the league changes its rules. This means that his father will have a season of “contract purging.”
LeBron James never played college basketball—he wasn’t planning on doing so during high school and was even disqualified by the NCAA because he “gave an advantage” at Nike summer camp, ESPN reports.

“I’m retiring,” James suddenly told the media, those were the first words he announced.
The announcement sent the sports world into immediate awe.
“How can he retire at the top of his game? It’s like retiring at the top of the King Kong Empire State Building. Like Martha Stewart just before she went to jail,” said one disgruntled Cavs fan.
James’ retirement may be the most unexpected in sports history. One of the most recognized figures at the pinnacle of the league and without a championship going out. What’s even more surprising is that he did it about a month before free agency opened, where he is guaranteed huge money.
On top of this, James stated that he plans to become a “master gardener.”
“I thought I’d do gardening because it’s the closest thing to play in the (Madison Square) Garden. So I’ll play in the garden either way. Isn’t that great?”
If that’s what you want us to think, LeBron, that’s great.
He announced that he planned to take a class on gardening (“my first class since high school”) to learn all the tricks and trades of entertainment. In short, he plans to become the “master gardener”.
There were rumors that James had limited his favorite destinations to Chicago, New York and New Jersey. But he will now be in a garden in Akron.
