Growing up in French Lick, Indiana, he was a local basketball phenomenon. Highly recruited, he initially signed on to play for Indiana Hoosiers coach Bobby Knight, but dropped out after a month and returned to the French Lick to attend a local community college. The following year he attended the smaller Indiana State University, eventually playing for the Sycamores for three years. Drafted by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft after his second year at Indiana State, Byrd elected to stay in college and play one more season. He then led his team to an undefeated regular season in 1978–1979. The season ended with a memorable national championship game matchup against Michigan State, a team that featured Magic Johnson, beginning a career-long rivalry that the two shared for more than a decade.

Byrd entered the NBA for the 1979–1980 season, where he made an immediate impact, starting as a power forward and leading the Celtics to an improvement of 32-wins the previous season before being eliminated from the playoffs in the conference finals. He played for the Celtics during his entire professional career (13 seasons), making them appear in five NBA Finals and three NBA Championships. He played most of his career with forward Kevin McHale and center Robert Parrish, considered by some to be the greatest front court in NBA history. Byrd was a 12-time NBA All-Star, won two NBA Finals MVP awards and received the NBA Most Valuable Player Award three times in a row (1984–1986), making him the only forward in league history to do so.

The following is an excerpt from the e-book The Crossover: A Brief History of Basketball and Race, from James Naismith to LeBron James.

If the Miami Heat reaches the finals, there’s no doubt that NBA commissioner David Stern and executives from ABC and ESPN will burn a little sunshine for the basketball marketing gods. LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh are unlikely to receive big ratings from drama competing for the title in their first season together.

They also can’t help but be a little disappointed that Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers were so easily cashiered by the Dallas Mavericks, leading to a relative lack of star power among the Western Conference contenders.

Since 1984, Stern’s first year as head of the league, the gold standard for the Finals has been to have teams with big stars and huge personalities to fuel the drama and attract an audience – it’s that way. Not much different from the way pro wrestling deliberately constructs fights. among its stars.

When matchups don’t make sense—think of the San Antonio Spurs versus the New Jersey Nets in 2003—the ratings are disappointing. Sadly, for all his credibility and consistent play, it’s doubtful that Tim Duncan has ever kept anyone glued to the TV.

This model of basketball masquerades as big-time entertainment riding on the backs of two men, of course: Ervin “Magic” Johnson and Larry Bird. He not only redefined the game for the modern television age, but also inadvertently carried much of the nation’s racial baggage on his shoulders.

Larry Legend (or Hick from French Lick) is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He was a famous NBA player during the 1980s and is now a Basketball Hall of Famer. He is also a part of The Dream Team, the American basketball team that won the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Larry Bird is best known for his retro Boston Celtics get-up. He wears a green Boston Celtics basketball jersey, green basketball shorts, white knee-high socks with green stripes, and black boots.

Height

Former American basketball player, who played with the Boston Celtics. He mentioned about his height in his own book, saying, “I was about six-four as a junior, six-six or so as a senior and I grew to six-nine. This one It’s a completely different game when you’re a six-nine.”

A big deal for me was when I grew from 6-6 to 6-9 between high school and college. If I was 6-6 in this league, I would have struggled. At 6-9 years old, I can hit people younger than me and surround myself with older people. You want to grow, but you want to do it at the right time. You don’t want to be 6-9 in sixth grade.

Contrary to the opinion of many NBA fans of the 1980s, LeBron James took the “NBA’s Greatest Little Forward” mantra from Larry Bird a while back. Now, a more mod may nip at the 3Bird’s heels.

In the middle of the 2015–16 season, ESPN compiled a ranking of the 3 greatest ever. At the time, which preceded Kevin Durant’s Golden State Warriors tenure, the top five read: LeBron, Byrd, Julius Irving, KD and Elgin Baylor.

Over the past three years, Durant has added a lot of legacy points. In discussions about where he stands in the history of the game, supporters can point to two NBA titles and two Finals MVPs.
