Lakers vs Pistons: Odds| Line| Spread| NBA picks| Predictions

The Lakers–Pistons rivalry is an American professional basketball rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Detroit Pistons. This rivalry, which featured three times in the NBA Finals (1988, 1989, 2004), pitted All-Star-laden Lakers teams against blue-collar, team-first oriented Pistons squads. Despite playing the underdog in all three of their Final Round meetings with Los Angeles, Detroit had significant success against the Lakers, claiming the NBA title against them twice.

Why the Lakers can cover
The Lakers vs Pistons enter this matchup with a better offense. Los Angeles is one of the most efficient shooting teams in the NBA, making 49.1% of field goal attempts and 57% of 2-point attempts. The Lakers are also in the league’s top eight in free throw attempts (24.5 per game), points in the paint (55.7 per game) and fast break points (15.5 per game). Los Angeles is also facing a Detroit offense that ranks among the league’s bottom five in offensive efficiency, producing only 108.8 points per 100 possessions.

The Pistons are also making only 9.9 3-pointers per game and making 34.2% of 3-point attempts, and Detroit commits the second-most turnovers in the NBA (17.2 per game). On the other hand, Los Angeles leads the NBA in free throw prevention, giving up only 18.4 attempts per game on defense. The Lakers are also in the top eight in the league in opponent field goal percentage (45.6%) and blocked shots (6.0 per game) this season. Here’s a look at which team to pick.

Why can the piston cover
Detroit is in desperate need of a winning streak and the Pistons have a standout player in Cade Cunningham. He is averaging 28.0 points per game over the last three contests, improving from his season-long averages of 22.2 points and 7.1 assists per game. Cunningham leads an offense that has top-10 marks in offensive rebounding, assists, free throw accuracy and points in the paint. Los Angeles has struggled on the road.

Spread

Detroit sees its hopes of bouncing back from last season’s poor performance fading as the team sits at a 2-15 record on the season. As for Los Angeles, their record dropped to 10–8 with that loss, their fifth consecutive loss.

Apart from losing their last games, both teams failed to cover the spread. Moving forward, the Lakers are the favorites in this one, as experts expect them to win by 7.5 points. Those looking to play the spread should keep Los Angeles’ opponent in mind: They have a record of 3-6 against the spread vs. Detroit in their last nine games.

In their last game against the Lakers in December 2022, the Pistons fell 124-117. Can the Pistons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We will find out soon.

NBA picks

There’s no hiding the fact that the Lakers were just worked by the 76ers. However, LA has had far more positives than negatives this season. They became the first team to sweep the group stage of the NBA In-Season Tournament, and we’ve seen much more consistent play from Anthony Davis.

Even if the Lakers haven’t been as strong as they are, Detroit has been that week. They’re just 2-15 on the year and on a 14-game losing streak. Worse yet, that streak was extended two nights ago with a loss to the Washington Wizards, who were 2-14 heading into that matchup. Even with a healthy Cade Cunningham this year, they simply can’t put things together.

Therefore, we expect another streak to continue, which is LA beating Detroit. They’ve won five straight against the Pistons, and the most recent was also on the road. We’d also suggest taking the over in this matchup, but our best Lakers vs. Pistons prediction is on LA’s money line (-290 at FanDuel Sportsbook), and don’t worry, we’ll be sharing how to get far more value out of that price.

Predictions

Lakers vs Pistons will take more than one player to turn things around for the Detroit Pistons this season, but Cade Cunningham is the real leader of this team and a franchise cornerstone. Although he is putting up big numbers, it is not a winning formula.

But I’m expecting a response from Detroit here after Williams’ candid evaluation on Monday night. It starts with Cunningham taking a strong hold on offense, and I like the look of the over for his points and assists tonight.

I’m leaning toward either point for a few reasons, including the feeling that Cade may ultimately be in lead-by-example mode to prevent a Pistons defeat. Cunningham has scored 26 or more points in each of his last three games – and, while the efficiency hasn’t been there, he’s not lacking in volume.

He has taken at least 17 shots in his last five contests and I see him winning the duel with opposite number D’Angelo Russell. It also helps that Cade’s numbers trend up across the board when he plays at home, and he finished with 26 points against the Wizards at Little Caesars Arena earlier in the week.
