Trade rumors
On Thursday evening, we wrote that the Lakers’ recovery meant the team was facing some tough roster decisions if they wanted to keep replacement players like Stanley Johnson or Darren Collison when Rajon Rondo was forced to leave the NBA’s COVID-19 crisis. -19 had returned from health. and security protocols.
Well, it looks like Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka was a little ahead of us, because about 30 minutes later, multiple reports indicated that the team was in talks to send Rondo to open a roster spot at the Cleveland Cavaliers. And on Friday morning, The Athletic’s Shams Charania and ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed that trading is happening
Roster 2022
The Lakers have three stars on big contracts – LeBron James ($41 million), Anthony Davis ($36 million), and Russell Westbrook ($44 million). LeBron and Eddie are staying upstairs. The Lakers have reportedly spoken out about the Russia trade, though it seems unfathomable that a team will put together money to acquire an incredible 33-year-old on the decline. Then again, it’s the NBA – never say never.
Most Lakers rosters include minimum contracts. He has a trade exception of $2.7 million from the Marc Gasol deal. Here is the draft capital they can transfer:
First-rounder in 2027 or 2028.
First round swaps in 2023 and 2026.
Second rounder in 2023, 2023 (via Chicago), 2024 (via Washington or Memphis), 2025, 2027, 2028, 2028 (via Washington).
Game last night
December 15 is the unofficial start of the trade season, as a significant proportion of free agents who signed with teams this past off-season are now eligible to be traded. That means we’re about to hear a lot of Lakers fans asking, “Hey, can we get that guy?”
Through nearly 30 games of the 2021–22 regular season, the Los Angeles game has been without motivation, prompting speculation that general manager Rob Pelinka may try to shake things up before the trade deadline. The Lakers are just above .500 (15-13) and sit in sixth place in the Western Conference standings entering Wednesday night’s game against the Mavericks.
Here’s the good news for Purple and Gold: The Lakers have won five of their last seven games, and LeBron James has been in great form since returning from an early-season injury. Injury and COVID-19 issues have forced Frank Vogel to play a variety of lineups, but Los Angeles have found a way to keep themselves above the play-in tournament line.
bad news? The Lakers didn’t take advantage of the soft slate at the start of the year, and they now have the toughest remaining event in the NBA, per tankathon. He also has many players in the league’s health and safety protocols, and there will be more injury-related absences down the road.
Simply put, this Los Angeles team doesn’t look more like a title contender than the Warriors or the Suns—at least not yet. Can the Lakers find a real difference-maker before the February 10 deadline?
Rumors
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Cleveland Cavaliers are in “serious talks” with the Los Angeles Lakers to acquire veteran point guard Rajon Rondo.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed the report:
It comes in the wake of Ricky Rubio tearing his ACL this week, ending his season, while Colin Sexton was already out for the year with a torn meniscus. Those two injuries have left the revived Cavs (20-14) incredibly thin at point guard.
Rondo, 35, hasn’t made much of an impact for the Lakers this season, averaging just 3.1 points and 3.7 assists in 16.1 minutes per game in 18 competitions. While a hamstring injury and his current stint in the league’s health and safety protocols have cost him the game, he has fallen below the pecking order in the rotation.
