Middle finger
Kyrie Irving’s fight against fans of the opposing team continued on Sunday, with her team losing 115-114 to the Celtics.
During the fourth quarter of the defeat, Irving doubled middle fingers to Celtics fans before punching the ball in. Trying to avoid being seen, Irving put both his hands behind his head and gave the fans two middle fingers.
Earlier in the third quarter, Irving was also seen giving medium to Celtics fans. After making the bucket, the point guard grabbed a finger, but it is unclear whether it was his middle or index finger from the video.
A video also surfaced of Irving cursing a fan as the Nets were on their way back to the locker room at halftime on Sunday. The fan can be heard saying “Kyari, you suck” and Irving replied “Suck my d—b—–.”
The former Celtics point guard could get a hefty fine coming his way. This is not his first time this season, though he has entered it with fans of a former team. Irving was fined $25,000 in January after he was recorded telling a Cavaliers fan, “Got you a championship, Mother——-s still ungrateful.”
Speaking to reporters after the game, Irving addressed his interactions with Boston fans, saying, “It’s the same energy I’m giving back to them.”
Did play for the boston celtics
It’s no secret that there is no love lost between the Boston Celtics and Kyrie Irving. The Brooklyn Nets guard played for the Celtics for two seasons, during which he was reportedly a major part of some chemistry problems in the locker room, which fans considered a disappointing finale.
During Sunday’s Game 1 between the No. 7 Nets and No. 2 Celtics, Irving was showered with blessings from TD Garden fans and the “Kyrie Sucks” chant. So when Irving dropped a hard, corner 3-pointer in the closing minutes of the third quarter, Irving decided to send a message to the crowd… and he used his middle finger to do it.
The broadcast prompts the Boston crowd to point out Irving’s “salute” and mention that he is likely to receive a fine for his actions. This isn’t the first time Irving has hit out at the Celtics. Before his first game at TD Garden since joining the Nets in 2020, Irving burned sage around the court in an attempt to “purify the energy”. Later that season, Irving appeared on the Celtics logo in midcourt after a 141-126 Nets win in Game 4 of their playoff series.
He was asked about the incident during the postgame press conference, and Irving replied that he just wanted to exchange the energy the fans were giving him.
