Kyler Cole Murray (born August 7, 1997) is an American football quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). After a stint with the Texas AMs, Murray played college football in Oklahoma, where he won the Heisman Trophy as a junior. Murray was selected first overall by the Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was selected ninth overall by Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Oakland Athletics in the 2018 draft, making him the first player to be drafted in the first round of both games.

Just 0.1% of NFL athletes identify as Asian American, according to Yahoo! Sports, groups such as the Arizona Korean Association are hoping that with players like Kyler Murray, stereotypes will continue to fade away and glass ceilings will be shattered.

Kyler Murray is number one on the football field and number one in the hearts of many Cardinals fans like Nancy Bay.

“Excitement is the first word I can use to describe — and pride,” Bey explained.

And it is for good reason. Nancy, Kyler, and 30,000 other Arizonans have something very special – their Korean heritage.

Kyler’s father is black and her mother is half Korean.

“Every game he’s playing, we’re glued to the TV. And as Korean Americans, we’re behind Kyler Murray every single week,” Nancy said. “We’re rooting for him every single week. We get hurt when he tackles. We’re all excited when he scores! Everyone does it especially for the Korean Americans in Arizona.”

Career stats

Murray was born in Bedford, Texas to Kevin Murray and Missun Henderson. He attended Allen High School in Allen, Texas. As a senior in 2014, he was the Gatorade Football Player of the Year and became the first player to be named Mr. Texas Football twice. His team won three consecutive state championships and 43 games. He missed a start during this streak and ended his career as a starting quarterback with a perfect 42–0 record.

Murray was ranked by ESPN, Scout.com and 247Sports as a five-star recruit and the best double-threat quarterback in his class. In May 2014, he joined the Texas A. committed.
