Schwarber was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the first round, fourth overall, of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. He signed on June 11.

The Cubs could not find a trade partner or room for Schwarber’s projected $8 million salary. The Nationals then signed Schwarber to a one-year, $10 million contract and traded him to the Red Sox for a prospect in the midst of a 32-homer season.
