Kurt Busch did not drive his 23XI Racing Toyota at Pocono Raceway on Sunday afternoon because doctors did not approve the former series champion to compete after another evaluation following a crash in qualifying.

45 Toyota driver Bush made it to the second round of NASCAR Cup Series qualifying on Saturday afternoon when he spun his lap into Turn 3, back into the outside wall.

The car then backtracked and rammed into the wall from the right front. Busch climbed out and headed for the ambulance under his power to make the mandatory trip to the infield care center.

“This morning, Kurt Bush met with doctors at the Infield Care Center for further evaluation after his accident during yesterday’s qualifying session,” a NASCAR statement said. “Following evaluation, Kurt Busch is not approved to race at today’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Pocono Raceway.”

Not racing

Kurt Busch was not cleared by NASCAR’s medical staff to compete in Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway, and the 23XI Racing driver was replaced by 19-year-old Ty Gibbs, who finished 18th in the race. Denny Hamlin won.

Bush, 43, who has indicated that next season will be his last driving in NASCAR, tweeted that he suffered “concussion-like symptoms” from a hit during Saturday’s qualifying season.

“The tests indicate that I am still recovering,” Bush wrote.

Bush, who made 776 Career Cup debuts, is the 2004 Series champion and is driving in his first season for the team co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin. His Number 45 Toyota turned around on Saturday and got stuck in NASCAR’s protective safe.

23XI chose Gibbs, the grandson of Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, and former NFL coach, to make his debut. Gibbs finished second in Saturday’s Xfinity Series race and is third in the series points standings.

Ty Gibbs said on Sunday that when he got the call on Saturday to replace Bush, he had to go to the side of the highway and collect his thoughts. Gibbs was already back in North Carolina and stayed on the racing simulator until 1 a.m. to prepare himself for his debut.
