Wong married Alisa Knoll in November 2015. They met at university, where she was a track and field athlete, and he was a football player.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Wong in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, and was promoted to the majors two years later. He was named National League Rookie of the Month in May 2014.

Contract

On February 5, 2021, the Brewers officially signed second baseman Colton Wong to a two-year, $18MM contract with a third team option. The 30-year-old had first hit free agency after the St. Louis Cardinals declined his $12.5MM option.

Wong was coming off an offensive season slightly below his standards, not like he was a heavy hitter in the first place. But he was also coming off his second straight Gold Glove season as well in eight years as the only team he had ever played for.

Colten Wong (calf) to begin rehab work this weekend

Colten Wong will begin a rehab job later this week.

Wong has been on IL with a calf injury since June 8, and suffered a setback on his way to recovery that delayed his return. Assuming that all has gone well on his rehab assignment, he should be able to return relatively quickly at this point, so fantasy managers can expect him to activate for a weekly period following the upcoming one.

While recovering, Wong has served as the team’s leadoff hitter, where he has been instrumental. In today’s game, this role is usually assigned to a player with some excellent on-base skills. He’s expected to watch a lot of pitches, walk his fair share, and probably has some base-stealing ability as a bonus.

Think back to the time the Brewers signed on Lorenzo Cain to serve as their leadoff man in 2018. Cain changed his approach to see more pitches, make free passes, and reach base at a higher rate. For the first time in his career, Cain ran at a double-digit clip (11.5%), and his .395 on-base percentage dramatically exceeded his career-high .340 mark.

One might expect Wong to follow a similar model, but he’s actually doing the opposite. He hasn’t gone to the plate to pick up some pitches and do a walk. Instead, he has been notably more aggressive than in his final season as a Cardinal.
