As the College Basketball Conference season heats up, more and more players will be unavailable due to new or serious injuries, COVID-19 health protocols, and other off-the-court matters. And for the sports bookmaker, the last-minute updated status of injuries can be the deciding factor in betting on too many sports on the board. We take a look at some of the players with positions in question in some of the most prominent-conference matchups on Tuesday, January 25th. How long were Illinois’ Kofi Cockburn and Andre Kerbello on court together in a double-overtime loss against Purdue on Monday. It’s also how long they’ve been on the court together since November 23, when point guard Carbello played his last game before being shut down for eight weeks. And now Cockburn, college basketball’s best center – and the only player in the country to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds – is out with an injury of his own. And for how long? The Illini couldn’t possibly know the answer while putting her first-place Big Ten record on the line Friday night in Maryland. Cockburn may have suffered an injury while going to a Purdue game during a weekend practice. He then took at least one elbow to the head from the Boilermakers 7-4 center Zach Eddy. Cockburn spent the majority of the game – and the bulk of the second half – on the bench with fouls.

As Michigan State prepares to take on the top-25 Illinois team on the road, one question looms large, literally and figuratively. Illini star center Kofi Cockburn’s position is up in the air a day before the Spartans’ Tuesday game with the Illini, when he missed the game due to concussion protocol at the Illini’s Friday night in Maryland. Cockburn averages 21.1 points in 14 games and 11.8 rebounds per game, earning him the buzz for the Big Ten and National Player of the Year awards.

Tom Izzo knows that the state of Michigan faces a major challenge Tuesday night in Illinois. How big, exactly, depends on the condition of the 7-foot, 285-pound center Kofi Cockburn. The Illinois junior star missed Friday’s game in Maryland, losing 81-65 to the Illini as he was working his way through concussion protocol. Unsure about whether Cockburn will be approved for Tuesday night’s meeting in Champagne, Illinois, Izzo said the uncertainty adds a layer of difficulty to MSU’s preparation.
