Draft
A month ago, if I said that Kofi would return to college with his name removed from the NBA draft, there was no question that he would return to Illinois. I never had any doubts that he could go somewhere else. But now it doesn’t seem so. Entering Kofi’s name on the transfer portal means he is not happy with Illinois. You never leave a situation where you are happy. It just doesn’t happen.
Now, there’s a chance Kofi will return to Illinois. But I would think, and this is just speculation, that his chances of returning to Champagne are pretty slim. Again, if you are happy with your status then you do not register your name in the transfer portal. I would like to point out that less than 3 percent of players who enter the transfer portal actually return to their original team.
NBA Draft
Former Illinois center Kofi Cockburn will reportedly withdraw from the NBA draft and explore his collegiate options, according to Pro Insight’s Andrew Slater.
Cockburn announced on April 18 that he would announce the NBA draft after a strong campaign with Illinois. He eventually enrolled himself in the transfer portal, leaving his option open to return to school the next session if he dropped out of the draft.
The 7-footer was confirmed last month that he would drop the rest of his college eligibility and remain in the NBA draft, but he has changed course. He may now be thinking about transferring to another school or returning to Illinois for his junior year.
Rivals
Kofi Cockburn was told Illinois and Brad Underwood had no history of coaching talented biggies until recently, but the 7-footer didn’t care. Kofi Cockburn can attest that negative hiring pitches are not a myth.
Consensus The former four-star prospect heard the same pitch when he would name Illinois as one of his finalists in his hiring process. Underwood has repeatedly told the media that he and assistant coach Orlando Antigua are already committed to plans to play Cockburn and the sophomore. Giorgi Bezhanishvili on the floor together.
Cockburn’s 7-foot and 290-pound frame will make practically anyone believe he’s a slow, plodding half-court player who hasn’t made up for Underwood’s high-tempo system at both ends of the playing floor. And you would probably be wrong.
“He’s not a plodder that’s for sure,” Underwood said.

Illinois Fighting The Illini scored an impressive victory on the road against the Michigan State Spartans in their last game, despite losing two of their best players. Center Kofi Cockburn and guard Andre Carbello sit against the Spartans due to concussion protocol and COVID protocol respectively. Will the two be available for Illinois’ game against the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday. According to Scott Ritchie of the News-Gazette, Cockburn remains in concussion protocol and Kerbello remains in COVID protocol. Both players are likely to be named as suspects, although Kerbello is probably ruled out. Cockburn can be cleaned up at any time, so he’s the one to watch before this competition. If both players can’t go, Illini will rely on Trent Frazier and Alfonso Plummer on Saturday.
Right now in the DraftKings sportsbook, the Illini are listed as the 3-point favorite with the line open as well. Total 139.5. sits on.
