The widow of Kobe Bryant has been awarded $16m (£13.6m) in damages over leaked graphic images of the helicopter crash that killed the American basketball star and his daughter in 2020.

Vanessa Bryant, 40, said she had a panic attack after sharing images taken by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and firefighters.

A federal jury now said the county must pay Mrs Bryant for emotional distress.

$15m will be paid to co-plaintiff Christopher Chester.

Mrs Bryant’s husband Kobe Bryant, 41, daughter Gianna, 13, and six family friends died in a helicopter crash in California Inn. January 2020. Mr Chester lost his wife Sarah and daughter Peyton in the accident.

A Los Angeles Times report claimed that county employees took photos at the crash site and shared them with others, angering the families of the victims.

Last November, the county agreed to pay $2.5m (£2.1m) over the emotional distress caused to two families who lost relatives in the crash – but Mrs Bryant refused to settle.

Crying at the witness stand last week, Mrs Bryant recalled being at home with her other children when they read the LA Times story.

Age

The helicopter may have hit a hill in Calabasas, California on Sunday, January 26, 2020, but it was immediately felt around the world. The accompanying headline was completely surreal: Basketball legend Kobe Bryant has died at the age of 41.

The way Bryant mastered the game, it seems like he is unstoppable. He was a five-time NBA champion, an 18-time All-Star, a two-time NBA Finals MVP — and a two-time Olympic gold medalist to boot. And unlike players who zig-zag through teams, for all 20 seasons he played, he remained with the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2006, he scored 81 points in one game – the second highest in NBA history. Even though he retired from the sport in 2016, scoring an impressive 60 points in his final game, he found his way into other areas, most notably winning an Oscar in 2018 for his animated short Dear Basketball.
