Post game:
Head coach Kirby Smart had some revealing things to say after another top-ten win against the Arkansas Razorbacks. … The Bulldogs are the talk of college football, and their head coach is more confident than ever. He was asked what Georgia needs to dominate opponents, and he replied: “Patience.
Georgia’s Kirby Smart is the head coach of the top-ranked football team, but ranks just fifth among SEC coaches in pay and eighth overall nationally, according to USA Today’s annual salary survey. Smart’s total pay is $7.13 million, up from $6.93 million last year.
Recruiting:
One of those coaches told me years later that he was surprised by how basic Smart’s approach seemed at the time. Basically, Smart didn’t have a detailed plan for Georgia’s program – other than this: He was going to recruit. Smart made that goal quite clear.
Years later, with Smart’s Bulldogs undefeated and No. 1 in the country with a dominant defense, his efforts have become apparent on the field each weekend.
Player:
“There’s no coach out there that can out-coach recruiting,” Smart told reporters after beating rival Florida this past weekend. “I don’t care who you are. The best coach to ever play the game better be a good recruiter, because no coaching is going to out-coach players. Anybody will tell you our defense is good because we’ve got good players.”
More than anything else, Smart has tried to emulate Saban’s work ethic in recruiting. And unlike most schools, Georgia set up to be a legitimate recruiting rival for Saban’s Alabama powerhouse. Smart’s Bulldogs have a geographical advantage and exclusivity with one of the nation’s best in-state talent bases, and they’ve used it.
