Georgia coach Kirby Smart has produced the top team in the nation so far in the season, as Georgia enters its game against No. 11 Kentucky as the No. 1 team in the country.

And for the most part, Smart is well compensated for the work he does. Smart ranks in the country in terms of annual salary, making $7,133,600 for the 2021 year, according to the newly released USA Today head coach salary database.

But compared to some of Smart’s contemporaries, he’s actually slightly ahead of the pecking order compared to his current record. While Smart ranks eighth in the nation in terms of total pay, he ranks fifth among SEC coaches.

Nick Saban is ranked first with a total salary of $9,753,221. In second place is current LSU coach Ed Orgeron, who earns $9,012,917. As of December 1, Organon has made $17,150,000 purchases. The Tigers are 3-3 in the season so far and are pretty close to schedule.

Those two coaches have won two recent national titles. Dan Mullen is the next in the SEC coaches at $7,570,000. Mullen has a 1-3 record against Smart but his team won last season, finishing SEC East 8-4.

Smart and Saban’s relationship is well documented. Smart was a defensive assistant on Saban’s staff with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins for the first time in 2006, and Smart followed Saban to Tuscaloosa. Smart was Alabama’s defensive coordinator from 2008–2015, a time period that included four Alabama national titles.

Smart became head coach of his alma mater, Georgia, in 2016, and after four straight losses to Alabama (including two SEC championship games and one national title game), Smart eventually surpassed Professor.
