Kimi has broken several records during his 19 seasons in F1 and, as detailed in The Unknown Kimi Raikkonen, a biography written by Kari Hotkkanen, it was a habit he picked up long before joining the grid.

As is standard in Finland, he served 12 months of military service at the age of 18. Once, he and a friend were drunk and returning late. He decided to climb over the fence to avoid being caught, but the friend was spotted and caught. Meanwhile, Kimi hid in the ditch.

Once he felt the shore was clear, he climbed over the fence and crawled back to his barracks, but was eventually caught as well. As a punishment, a new record was made by imprisoning him in the said barracks for 20 days.

Ten years ago, one of the most famous racing drivers of the time was enjoying a magic doing pretty much everything he wanted, in a style that’s very much in keeping with his personality.

Kimi Raikkonen won the Formula 1 drivers’ championship in 2007, but after a disappointing two years with Ferrari, he was being paid not to drive when Fernando Alonso replaced him in 2010.

This gave Raikkonen the freedom to pursue other subjects that interested him, and he duly turned his attention to rallying, electing the full WRC as a member of the Citron junior team in 2010. But then came an even more unexpected crossover in 2011, when he drove across the Atlantic to try his hand at NASCAR.

“Obviously I was rallying and then some people approached me asking if I wanted to go out there and race X amount of times,” Raikkonen recalls. “I thought, why not? It fits in with the rally, and I was interested to see what it was like.
