Kyle Doukas thought he was leaving UFC Vegas 38 with a win, but he would go home with no contest on his record after his fight with Kevin Holland ended in bizarre circumstances.

The sequence began to end after both fighters had their heads down and they clashed head-to-head in a violent exchange of attacks. Unfortunately it was Holland who made the worst of it after being nearly knocked out of the headbutt by accident, which crashed him to the canvas.

Referee Dan Miragliota almost stepped in to stop the contest, but instead he continued the action with Doukas continuing to punish and then eventually wrapping up a permanent rear-neck choke submission against Cage.

Once it became clear there was no escape, Holland tapped out and for a moment it looked like Doukas was on his way to the biggest win of his youth UFC career.

Holland has added former two-division champion and UFC commentator Daniel Cormier and ex-welterweight champion Jonny Hendrix to his list of coaches as he tries to hone the skills he will need to stay with the UFC.

“Make grappling second nature,” Holland told reporters backstage at UFC 265. “By the time I make that second nature, the schedule is fully active. Every weekend if you want me.”

Hollands are known for their busy schedules. But in the light of back-to-back failures that apparently resulted in a difference in his battling ability, he decided to take his foot off the gas and learn.

Before that, Holland said, he would go through wrestling practice just to go through them. Now, he is really trying to be a better wrestler. The incentive is clear.

“If I fix wrestling holes, I don’t see too many gaps [in my game],” he said. “Just get better, and everything else will be fine on its own.”

There is some ground with promotion after a spectacular 2020 run in which they won five straight and were given the “Knockout of the Year” candidate. UFC president Dana White left no stone unturned to criticize Hollande’s performance against Derek Brunson, the fighter who broke that winning streak. But Holland said the promoter actually inquired about his wrestling training.

No Contest

Kevin Holland and Kyle Doukas face off in a middleweight clash at UFC Vegas 38 from UFC Apex tonight (Sat, October 2, 2021) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Holland attacked early with a long kick, prompting a great pair of hook and takedown attempts from Doukas. Doukas dragged his foe down on the mat on a few occasions, but Hollande immediately came back upstairs. Holland insisted on talking to Daniel Cormier at every opportunity in the mid-takedown defense. Holland landed a clean cross, then a sudden head-on clash sent Holland to the mat! Doukas immediately strikes the neck, first with a D’Ars choke then a guillotine. Hollande escaped, but Doukas leaped from behind and later forced a tap.

On replays, it was pretty clear that both men got into a head-on confrontation, but Holland definitely got the worst of it. Soon after, Doukas capitalized by jumping on the neck and forcing the finish.

As a result of the foul (see it here), the bout was declared “no contest”.
