One of Daimling’s astonishing 2022 Kentucky Derby picks: He’s wooing Epicenter, saying one of the top favorites barely even cracks the top three. The Steve Asmussen-trained horse is one of the top 2022 Kentucky Derby contenders as he has dropped out of the top two in only one career race. He won the Louisiana Derby and Ryzen Star, beating several other 2022 Kentucky Derby favorites in those races.

However, Daimling isn’t willing to pay the premium price on Epicenter because he’s not sure how it’ll run at Churchill Downs. In fact, one race that Epicenter finished off the board came last September at Churchill Downs, when he finished sixth in the seven-furlong maiden special weight race. He believes Epicenter will hit the board, but Daimling tells SportsLine “he’s going somewhere else” for his top pick.

Another stunner: Daimling is high on Mo Donegal, even though he is a nearly double-point long shot and will run from the inside post. No horse has won the Kentucky Derby since Ferdinand in 1986, but the position has produced eight winners and some horses that seemed better equipped to rail.

The 2022 Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 7 at 6:57 p.m. ET. And unlike previous years, the 148th run for rosé projects is a wide open run, as there are no overwhelming favorites — at least not yet.

Like any horse race, the prospects for the Derby will be fluid and we won’t know the favorites until very close to post-time.

However, the most likely scenario is that the morning’s favorite zandon will pass off as chalk. After finishing number 10 in the race, Chad Brown’s charge was posted to a 3–1 margin. Xandon’s main opponent would be No. 3 Epicenter, who checked in after the draw with a 7-2 odds.

Oddly, one thing horseplayers will have to keep in mind is that Jim “Mattress Mack” McKingwell plans to plunk down $4 million on the Derby and the horse he wants to stake is almost certainly the one as the favorite. Will be finished until we hear “And they’re there!

McIngvale, who is betting on his furniture store as part of a hedge against a Derby-related giveaway, will almost certainly be betting on Zandon or Epicenter.

The Rich Strike shouldn’t even have happened in the 2022 Kentucky Derby. The ethereal road was set to start from the number 20 post position and round out the 20-horse field.

But Ether Road was kicked out of the race on Friday morning, bringing Rich Strike in.

Despite late notice, extreme far-off posts and an astonishing 80-1 odds to win, Rich Strike, ruled by jockey Sunny Leone, pulled off the upset, ahead of favorites Epicenter and Xandon to win the 148th edition. Run for the rose.

“I don’t know how [to put it], when he hit the wire I fell off the paddock, I got passed out. I’m so happy,” trainer Eric Reid told NBC Sports after the race. “It’s something that everyone does, because we shouldn’t be here. But I knew this horse loves the track (at Churchill Downs) and he’s been training so well all year.”
