The Steelers picked Kenny Pickett in the first round in the second half of Sunday’s game against the Jets, but head coach Mike Tomlin is not saying whether he will remain quarterback in week five.

Tomlin said in his postgame press conference that he kept Piquet in the game because the Steelers “needed a spark.” Piquet provided one by running for two touchdowns to put the Steelers 20-10 at the start of the fourth quarter, but he threw a killer interception to set up the Jets’ game-winning touchdown drive, and Tomlin said that. They won’t have any comment about who will start next weekend against the Bills.

“We did what we needed to do to be in a position to win this game,” Tomlin said. “We’ll do it again. In terms of what happened here today, I want to keep it where we are. We’ll tackle that next week next week.”

The Steelers fell 1-3 with Sunday’s defeat and another at Buffalo would leave them with long odds of converting their season for a playoff berth. This will give the picket enough time to gain experience, but next time giving him the ball from the start may be the best argument.

Kenny Pickett’s size and overall athleticism are good for the quarterback position. He was asked to play a variety of concepts in Pittsburgh that would make his transition to the NFL a little easier than other prospects.

When he is in rhythm and able to anticipate the throw, Piquet has above-average arm strength, with flashes of his ability to steer the ball. He shows competitiveness when he’s in the pocket and scrambles to fight for extra yards, and his willingness to take hits is infectious to his teammates.

While Pickett shows a solid understanding of NFL-level concepts, he is inconsistent with his time on the throw, often one-on-one with his reading. He will arrive late on one concept to the second option because he is anticipating when the next route will be available.

He has a tendency to stare at an available route and then seek to launch a melee maneuver out of pocket at unnecessary times, which can lead to sacks and missed opportunities.

The ability to miss defenders in the picket pocket and down the field and off-platform throws on broken plays is an obvious strength. He’s not an idol by any means, and he can actually make up for a crime. But he’s not a tremendous athlete, and the NFL defense will punish that trend if his anticipation and willingness to work out of pocket doesn’t improve.

There are also times when Pickett will whittle down options on high-low concepts if deeper routes are available. It’s good that he can find a throw, but he can leave some meat on the bone. As a potential 24-year-old rookie with over 40 starts in his college career, NFL teams would expect more consistency in that regard.

Father

Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett talks about his relationship with his father, Ken.

The Steelers came in an NFL-best of six Super Bowl titles (tied with the Patriots) in QB with Terry Bradshaw and Ben Roethlisberger. Rookie QB Kenny Pickett hopes to add another Lombardi trophy to the Steelers trophy case.

After his post-draft tour of the Steelers side of the facility, Pickett spoke with his father, Kane.

“When he got to tour Pittsburgh and see those Super Bowl trophies, the next thing he said to me was, ‘I’m going to bring a Super Bowl back to Pittsburgh,'” Ken Pickett told Mike Defabo of The Athletic in an interview. The story was posted on Thursday.

Pickett clearly derives his trust from his father, who has his son’s back.

Ken Pickett said, “Let him write his story because whoever has doubted him has seen that they made a mistake.”
